GONE!

Bidding has ENDED on the Greg Simkins painting "The Good Soul," and we have raised over $6,000 for the American Cancer Society! Thank you to Greg, Jenn, everyone who bid and the auction winner. Today would have been my father's 69th birthday (weirdly the auction was not planned to end on his actual birthday, but it did!) and I know he'd be so humbled and happy to see people doing stuff like this in his name. Light at the end of a tunnel. Again, thank you.

Happy Camper

I couldn't be more happy with the images I've recently received of work from our next SF show. It's the movie poster show where each artist was given a poster to use as their canvas (the sister show to "Cover Band" last year in LA). And I was freaking out a little, so to say I'm pleasantly surprised is an understatement. And, it's not that I didn't have faith in the artists, it's because we gave them a pretty crazy project to work on, so we didn't really know what the outcome would be. First off, the posters are HUGE, each approx. 27 x 40 inches, and then they're thin, glossy paper stock, so the medium itself is a challenge to work with. And then lastly, we got to choose which poster went to each artist, so it was a total surprise when they arrived in the mail. So, we gave these artists quite a challenge, but definitely a fun one!

I was getting a bit nervous because we sent out the posters a while ago and I wasn't hearing anything from any of the artists until a few days ago! But finally, we started to get some of the finished pics back and they are AMAZING!! The whole point of the show is to collaborate with the existing poster image, so here are a few for you to see...

I love these shows because everyone takes a different approach and it's really fun to see what everyone did. We also started a blog specifically for this show, where the artists can post progress pics and talk about their pieces. You can also see the entire show lineup, so definitely check it out... http://1988movieposters.blogspot.com/

Stay tuned cause this is going to be a really fun show! It opens on September 18th at G1988 San Francisco!

To The 9's

It's that time of year again. Here at the LA Gallery we're getting ready for a Luke Chueh solo show, basically a bi-annual tradition here at G1988: LA that we're oh so very happy to partake in.

Not much has been revealed about "Inferno," the cryptic exhibit set to open on Sept. 9th (09/09/09), other than Luke's revelation that the show will be his reinterpretation of Dante's Inferno and the 9 rings of Hell. He's also been pretty vocal about this show being the start of what he hopes will be a shift of focus in his work, attempting to create full scenes, evolve and create his most complex, and grueling, pieces yet. And I've been just as much in the dark this year, so it was an obvious jump for joy moment when Luke sent me some teaser-ific images of 3 different pieces, focusing in on mostly details. It ain't giving us much, but what he is giving - is pretty amazing.

Luke's hell actually looks worse than real hell. I know because I've seen it - when I paid $8 to see "G.I. Joe."

I can tell you this: there will be a print set available that people will want to freak out about, and each image from the set will be available individually as well, just with some different specifics. Don't be "left" out.

Ben Strawn

We're pretty much done installing our new SF show "Call of the Wild," which opens tomorrow night. We've worked with Ben Strawn a few times over the past year, but this is the first time we've had a large amount of work from him and they are so amazing. He creates boxes using layers of plexiglass and painting with acrylic on each layer, which gives each piece a really cool sense of depth. When you lift the boxes to the light, the light comes through all of the layers of plexi and illuminates the piece from the inside. It's really cool and I wish everyone could see these in person because it makes a huge difference. If you like them online, trust me they are even more impressive in person. Everyone who has come into the gallery this past week stops and stares at Ben's work in amazement. Here are a few pics from the installation.

And here are a few close ups of the works...

Beetle

Swan

Veinhead

The show opens tomorrow night from 7-10PM at G1988 San Francisco and also features some amazing work by Ryan Sanchez, Gideon Boomer, and Melissa Haslam. Stay tuned for the online preview tomorrow!

The Good Soul Artist

A few weeks back we had a Skate Deck and Print Release for artist Greg "Craola" Simkins here at G1988: LA, and Greg live painted for a few hours. He went home, finished the piece, and created "The Good Soul," a 24 x 36 inch beauty, that is now being auctioned by Greg and Gallery1988, with every penny being donated to the American Cancer Society (in the memory of my late father, and huge Greg Simkins fan, Lawrence Karp).

This piece really is awesome, and the results of Greg's real only live painting session ever. If you want to stop by the LA gallery and see it in person, feel free. It's here.

And you can bid on it here:

Good luck and thank you Greg and Jenn!

Sus-tense

Wanna test how impatient the world can be? Run a free contest that ends August 8th, then wait a week to post answers? It's kinda amazing.

Anyway, although we're still going through emails of people's guesses on naming every weapon in the Crazy 4 Cult 3-D Tim Doyle poster, we figured we'd still put the key and answers up and let the calm kick in before we've picked the winner.

So here we go, and yes before you complain, he included cult properties that have movies coming out next year. Kind of a loophole, but also kind of fun:

A. Pulse Rifle- Aliens
B. Bat-Grapple- Batman 1989
C. Mini-Gun - Terminator 2
D. The Glaive - Krull
E. Bubo - Clash of the Titans
F. Capture Bolt Device - No Country for Old Men
G. Proton Pack - GhostBusters
H. Enviornment Helmet - Predator
I. .44 Magnum - Dirty Harry
J. Crysknife - Dune
K. Holy Grail - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
L. Megatron - Transformers the Movie 1985
M. Loki's Mask - The Mask
N. Odd Job's hat - Goldfinger
O. Leatherface's Chainsaw - Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974
P. Data's Bully Buster - Goonies
Q. Jason's Mask - Friday the 13th pt. 3
R. Identity Disc - Tron
S. Holy Hand Grenade - Monty Python and the Holy Grail
T. Thermal Detonator - Return of the Jedi
U. Training Sphere - A New Hope
V. Killer Ball - Phantasm
W. Fork - Army of Darkness
X. Auto 9 - Robocop
Y. Hunter Seeker - Dune
Z. Anakin's / Luke's Lightsaber - Star Wars
1. Johnny 5's head - Short Circut
2. Golden Gun - The Man with the Golden Gun
3. MacLeod Broadsword - Highlander
4. Atlantean Sword - Conan
5. Sword of Omens - Thundercats (2010)
6. Six-fingered Sword - The Princess Bride
7. Bond's Walther PPK - James Bond Films
8. The Golden Snitch - Harry Potter
9. Phaser - Star Trek Original Series
10. Green Lantern Ring - Green Lantern (2011)
11. BlasTech DL44 (Han Solo's gun) - A New Hope
12. PKD Blaster- Blade Runner
13. The One Ring - Lord of the Rings

Hope it was fun for everyone and we'll hopefully have a winner selected next week!

600

600th post. Feels nice for really no reason.

Wrapping up Crazy 4 Cult 3-D tomorrow. People will start to pick up their pieces and we'll begin the shipping process of what turned out to be the most successful show of 2009 so far. We really loved this year's installment, although missed our hosts Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier (but don't yet count them out of G1988 this year), and we want to thank EVERY artist who participated and obviously worked their asses off to make the show look that good! And thanks to every blog and press outlet who covered it! And don't say you weren't warned...."CRAZY 4 CULT 4: The Case of the Redundant Number" in 2010!

And now we look forward to "Monsters of POP!" opening this coming Tuesday, August 11th, featuring the work of Kiersten Essenpreis, Brandon Bird, Dave MacDowell and Netherland. We've shown you some of the Netherlan goodness last week...so for your weekend enjoyment here are two more sneak peaks at the 4-person exhibition.

"Freddy's Mishap" by Kiersten Essenpreis might be my favorite yet. Kiersten did an entire series with her take on classic monsters and in this one, Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy may have over extended himself a little. Look for her takes on Hitchcock's Birds, the Haunted House, Medusa and the Bad Seed. Pretty cool.

In what has to be the saddest coincidence in gallery history, Dave MacDowell pays tribute to the late John Hughes, a writer/director that not only was always one of my favorites, but also helped shape my generation. This is Dave's take on Edward Hooper's "Nighthawks," replacing the gloomy Diner inhabitants with the cast of the Brat Pack classic "The Breakfast Club." When Dave sent me the picture of this piece a few months ago, I LOVED it. And after the untimely passing of Hughes yesterday, I love it even more - as it captures the magic of The Breakfast Club, and pays tribute to one of the best. Awesome.

Remember, this and more at "Monsters of POP!" Opening Tuesday night, August 11st, 7-10 PM at G1988: LA.
