BOMBS AWAY

Our friends at The Hundreds announced an ounce of their involvement in the GPK art show and revival over their high successful blog, and at the same time gave you a few more exclusive previews, including Robert Brandenburg's piece below. Click the pic above to see more from The Hundreds and visit their Facebook page to learn how you can be the first to own The Hundreds x GPK.

Original card that inspired Robert:

And here's his explanation:

“The classic 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde” is now so heavily identified with its leading actors that people often forget that others had auditioned for those roles. This studio still shot shows Tommy Gun during a screen test for the part of Clyde Barrow. While it’s usually accepted that Warren Beatty took the role for himself because he was producing the movie; others suggest that he did so upon the insistence of Faye Dunaway (cast as Bonnie Parker), who objected to Tommy’s diminutive stature…he being just over 3 feet tall.”

And here's what he came up with, as he takes old paintings or photos he finds at swap meets or garage sales and adds his own pop culture twist:

Excited, yet?

SECOND look at Garbage Pail Kids x G1988

And here's your second look, guys. This one is from artist Rhys Cooper. He actually created 12 (!!!!!!!) smaller pieces from the show, which can also be bought as a set, and they all take the theme of GPK x Hollywood icons.

Excited yet? September 2nd at G1988 (Melrose).

Your FIRST Look at Garbage Pail Kids

Our plan with the upcoming Garbage Pail Kids tribute at G1988 (Melrose) on September 2nd is to keep as many of the pieces hidden until we open the doors. We kinda just want people to be blown away and surprised at how creative our artists have gone with this show (especially those who think Garbage Pail Kids aren't that important...CAUSE THEY ARE!). We want the experience to actually speak for itself, rather than have everyone see the completed before it even opens.

But we've been getting so many emails with people hoping to catch a glimpse and figure out what the show is all about, we have to change up the plan a little. So we're going to show a few before the opening reception in 2 weeks, and today, you'll see the first...

Iron Jaiden (Jay Shaw) gives his incredible take on Garbage Pail Kids, with a gallery art show twist!

This is going to be one amazing art show.

And don't forget about the Garbage Pail Kids movie screening the next night on September 3rd at the Silent Movie Theater (Cinefamily) on Fairfax at 10 PM. We're excited to have the movie's stars Mackenzie Austin and Arturo Gil in perform for a Q & A. Buy your tickets now by clicking the picture above. We'll be there too, with some art from the show for sale as well!

OH MAN!

We could not be more excited about this! TV producer and friend of the gallery, Martin Gero, is working on a new show called Highland Gardens, and they've been filming up in Toronto for the past few weeks. AND, he's included Gallery1988 in the script!!! How you ask?

Well, they've recreated Gallery1988 (Melrose) in Toronto!!! Isn't that the craziest thing you've ever heard???

We're honored. And you guys better keep your eyes and ears open for Highland Gardens, cause then we'll be TV stars and we'll wear sunglasses indoors.

Check out friend to the gallery Aziz Ansari as he critiques fan art of his image including pieces from our "Is This Thing On?" show from Kirk Demarais and Ruel Pascual. Thanks to Complex for the credit!

We should do this show again in 2012...

TEAM!!!!

It's that time again where we are looking for a Gallery intern to help with the runnings of our Melrose location. It would be a 3 month internship, and we're looking for help 2-3 days a week, a few hours a day. You'll learn the daily workings of an art gallery / retail space, and also probably listen to podcasts while we work. We prefer students looking for school credit, as anything outside of that would be a "volunteer," which we aren't mad at either, just putting out the standard rules. Volunteers also welcome.

If you are interested, feel free to email us at gallery1988melrose@gmail.com with a resume and some small talk about why you think you'd want to work with us.

THANKS.

GPK1988

Gallery1988 (Melrose) is proud to announce its upcoming show to kick off September, a month both gallery locations will celebrate as "Childhood Items We Miss The Most Month."
First up is an official tribute to the grossest trading card set ever produced, Garbage Pail Kids. 2 years in making, Gallery1988 will continue to be the world's #1 destinations for pop culture art, this time collaborating with a product that, in many cases, was the first instance of collectable art in our buyers' childhood lives (it was ours!).
Opening Friday September 2nd, you'll see the results when over 100 of your favorite artists were asked to create their own Garbage Pail Kids, and some may even become actual cards soon!
Produced with our friends at Topps and The Hundreds, this show will be of epic proportions. Stay tuned for more information about the show, upcoming collaborations between The Hundreds and GPK (and how you can get the first t-shirts at G1988), as well as a screening of the cinematic gem, "Garbage Pail Kids," with our pals at Cinefamily (The Silent Movie Theater) that you can attend on September 3rd!

Hope you guys have strong stomachs, because it's about to get gross.

More PEE-WEE!

We have a added a few more Pee-Wee pieces to the site!

Dan Goodsell "Mr. Toast Pee-Wee & Friends #1"

The Dan Goodsell watercolors were available in-store when the show opened, and we've finally scanned them all and added them to the website for online purchase. Also, we've added Ryan Brinkerhoff's "Tequila" prints, which missed the opening reception because of a small shipping delay, but they've arrived and look amazing!

The new work is available on our website at the following links...

The show is up for one more week at our Venice location, and then comes Nathan Stapley's solo show!

The Compartmentalizing of Nathan Stapley

Nathan Stapley is back at Gallery1988 later this month with a brand new solo show! We've worked with Nathan for years in the Melrose and San Francisco locations, but this will be his first show at our Venice gallery and he's coming to town all the way from NYC, so you must come say hello. The show is called "The Same Gang: compartmentalizing pop-culture iconography" and features all new works, where Nathan brings your favorite pop-culture icons together by similar attributes. For example, in the "Dads" painting, Jack Torrance from The Shining, Darth Vader, and Homer Simpson are just a few of our all-time favorite pop-culture fathers hanging out at a backyard BBQ. And we couldn't be happier because it's such a great concept and perfect fit for G1988. Here are a few sneak previews to get you excited about the show...

"Dads"

"Greasers"

"Ramones Warriors"

"The Same Gang: compartmentalizing pop-culture iconography" featuring all new works by Nathan Stapley opens Friday, August 26th from 7-10PM at Gallery1988 Venice!!

Don't miss it.

THIS FRIDAY AT MELROSE and some press!

This Friday at G1988 (Melrose) we're excited to unveil brand new works from artists Dan McCarthy & Jay Ryan...

Dan & Jay will be debuting new screenprints and paintings, and will both be in attendance! We know how highly anticipated this exhibit is, and they have definitely delivered some incredible works! This show will run through August 27th.

Also, after opening the Pee-Wee Herman tribute last Friday at G1988 (Venice), we were happy to see coverage from Los Angeles magazine (click the pictures to see the articles)...

The Onion...

and LAist...

And we got a call from the man himself, Paul Reubens, which was literally one of the most exciting moments of my life. He wanted to thank us, the artists involved and everyone who was excited about the art show and was insanely humbled by the admiration. He unfortunately couldn't make opening night, but will be in to see the works in person soon. He may even take some pictures, they'll last longer.
