More PEE-WEE!

We have a added a few more Pee-Wee pieces to the site!

Dan Goodsell "Mr. Toast Pee-Wee & Friends #1"

The Dan Goodsell watercolors were available in-store when the show opened, and we've finally scanned them all and added them to the website for online purchase. Also, we've added Ryan Brinkerhoff's "Tequila" prints, which missed the opening reception because of a small shipping delay, but they've arrived and look amazing!

Ryan Brinkerhoff "Tequila"

The new work is available on our website at the following links...

The show is up for one more week at our Venice location, and then comes Nathan Stapley's solo show!

The Day After...

So a nice Black Friday here at Gallery 1988, compared to the tragic insanity other places in the US, and some customers walked away with some super door buster deals. And now the Greg Simkins "It Wanders West" show comes down in LA, making way for Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and Gym Class Hero Travis McCoy's "Without You I'm Just Me," which opens Dec. 9th to what we figure will be a lot of fanfare.

We made these with our friends at Gelakins for the event:

And here's a sneak at another collabo with LA artist Jeff McMillan and Pete Wentz:

Going to be a lot of fun on Dec. 9th, so make sure to swing by, as you blog readers will be stoked to see what other G1988 frequenters have teamed up with the rock stars.

AND, don't forget about Dan Goodsell's solo show opening up over at our online interactive gallery, 88point5, today. You can check out the show by CLICKING HERE. Lots of pieces have already sold, but lots of amazing paintings and drawings are still available for your Toast obsessed loved ones! And you can converse directly with the artist on the site's discussion boards. So you know, Dan is also the world's most complete collector of vintage food memorabilia (especially cereals), so that's always fun to talk about on a message board.

Dan, Dan, the Toast Man

My girlfriend's favorite artist and the creator of Mr. Toast, Dan Goodsell is gearing up to open his 88point5.com online show, "Donuts, Dreams and Winter Scenes." If you can't find a holiday gift in this show, you might as well give up being festive. And I could chat about how cool Dan's work is for 100 hours, but I'm a gallery owner and it's almost my job to do so. My girlfriend on the other hand, she really is a bit more partial. She's very honest when it comes to art, even if it is hanging on her boyfriend's gallery walls, so I figured she could be our guest art critic about her absolute fav 1988 frequenter, Dan Goodsell. So why not hear from her today, on the eve of our 2 year anniversary? And check out 3 new pieces that will be part of Dan's 88point5 show, opening November 29th, that Chrissy will also give her opinions on.

Chrissy Herman, girlfriend: "From the second I set eyes on Mr. Toast I fell in love. To some he might just be a piece of toast, but to me he means so much more. Like in the star piece above, Mr. Toast is seen out on a clear, brisk, starry night. His eyes filled with reflections of all his hopes and dreams for the future. But he is still, calm and quiet - even with the heaviness of his thoughts. And in contrast to this inflective version of Mr. Toast, in the Paint By Numbers Mountain piece, our hero shows off his adventurous, carefree side. Like me, Mr. Toast finds a winter vacation in a log cabin to be extraordinarily romantic. You can figure out that he loves to cuddle up by the fire, sip on hot coca wrapped in a cashmere blanket and wear a silly hat. All while reading his old favorite childhood books, that bring him back to when he was just a little piece of bread. But he knows what else is coming...Spring. And in this piece, we do get a sneak at a season change. And like Jensen, Mr. Toast loves taking awkward pictures of himself in every new place he visits:

One one thing about Mr. Toast: He's a social dude. So he invited his friend, The Donut, to enjoy a weekend getaway to the mountains in the third piece. Together they watch the once frozen ground transform back into a beautiful flowing brook. Mr. Toast even seems to have taught The Donut the art of the awkward pose. Mr. Toast is an example to all. Mr. Toast is a dream. He is my dream."

Um, does my girlfriend want to leave me for Mr. Toast?

The Big Announcement

Yep, we are starting an online division of Gallery1988, and it's called 88POINT5. In addition to our gallery shows in LA and SF we will also have monthly online shows at WWW.88POINT5.COM.

In starting this project, we really wanted to focus a lot of attention on the artist. On the site you will see 15-20 new artworks for sale, the artist's bio and direct link to their website, and most important, we're adding a discussion forum. You will be able to communicate directly with the artist, ask them questions, give comments and have discussions.

We're launching 88POINT5 with an incredible artist named Jeannie Lynn Paske! You can check out her website here: http://www.obsoleteworld.com.

Jeannie's show opens on October 4th (very soon!) and future shows (just to name a few) will include Juri Ueda (Nov. 1) and Dan Goodsell (Nov. 29).

We feel that 88POINT5 is a great opportunity for us to really feature and give a lot of attention to emerging artists, while giving collectors a chance to purchase work at reasonable prices.

You can read more info on this new project in the press release that is posted below.

Gallery1988 Opens New Online Gallery
Emerging Artists and Affordable Artwork
October 4, 2008

At one point in 2008, Gallery1988 owners Jensen Karp and Katie Cromwell sat down to finish their 2009 exhibition schedule with the sense of confidence and ease they usually displayed during the 5 year history of owning and running their Los Angeles and San Francisco locations. It only took a few minutes of research to realize things just weren’t what they used to be. Artists who they had steadily exhibited since their inception in 2004 were now approached by galleries throughout the world, and most frequently in Los Angeles, booking their work, in some cases, 3 years in advance. The artists that one time were readily available to deliver a painting on Tuesday if you told them early enough on Monday morning, were now prepping for shows in a future decade. And yes, we are extremely happy for these artists. But we did realize this new way of booking so far in advance has created a large dilemma and obvious problem for our industry. With everyone booking so insanely far into the future, we fear that new artists, the new cycle of soon to be household names, will now find themselves without a home or outlet to show their work, as every space they strive to exhibit in will be filled until the next Olympics. Think of it this way – in 2005, if we would’ve booked 3 years in advance, imagine all the artists that were introduced during that time – and imagine that now, no one can be discovered.

With this in mind, Karp and Cromwell threw around ideas, hoping to keep the “catch a rising star” reputation they’ve created over the past 5 years, but still stay competitive amongst the newly created galleries and not be left in the cold. And this is where 88point5 Online Gallery was created.

88point5 Online will be a virtual art gallery, viewable only online at www.88point5.com, giving emerging artists an opportunity that seems less and less possible with the state of our industry – a solo show to build a young career. Every month, a new artist will debut a complete solo exhibition of 15-20 pieces at 88point5 Online, offering buyers an opportunity to be introduced to a new name and purchase affordable pieces before the whirlwind of popularity and inevitable price jumps. 88point5 Online will become the outlet to discover incredible new artists, finding themselves shut out of the gallery system because of paranoid competitive scheduling, and still able to offer affordable prices to create new fans.

And in addition to just showing their work on www.88point5.com, each artist will be partaking in an interactive message board, where this site can offer even more to the buyer than the gallery experience. Each month the featured artist is committed to answering questions and becoming involved in conversations on the site’s message board, allowing the perspective buyer to directly communicate with the artist through a click of a button. This feature will add a sense of personalized communication to your purchase, as well as create a brand new buying experience within the art world.

Although learning that artists are booked into 2011 came as a shock to Karp and Cromwell, it also doubled as a blessing for Gallery1988. It allowed the curating team to visualize the future void of introducing new artists without just including them in a yearly group show, offering three artists “solo shows” in one gallery all at the same time, or giving a tiny wall in the back of our space a hip name and pretending it’s in a different exhibition room. 88point5 Online will give these artists the opportunity to create a solid body of work and allow the buyer to become involved in their story and growth, eventually leading to more visibility at Gallery1988 LA and SF…because the truth is, our schedule is pretty open.

88point5 Online will launch October 4, 2008 with an online show featuring the work of Jeannie Lynn Paske. The online shows will rotate monthly.

Pictures Galore

We got a pretty brilliant solo show opening up here at the Los Angeles gallery tomorrow night, March 4th, from 7-10 PM with NY artist Andrew Bell, in an art festival he's calling, "Burning Desire." This show is like a Hobo Stew, it has EVERYTHING in it. Paintings, drawings, prototype vinyl toys for sale, vinyl toys, large furniture-like sculptures and a HUGE gallery installation. Here's an in-action pic of Andrew working with the Creatures in his Laptop.

This is going to be a seriously fun show, so if you're in the hood, make sure to swing by our LA location tomorrow night, 7 - 10 PM. We will be posting a link to pre buy all the artwork on our website, gallery1988.com, on the LA side top banner tomorrow also during the day! Another sneak peak:

Oh, and LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!

We just got these awesome G1988: LA stickers from our friend Rick at stickyricks.net and only had them available in the gallery for a few days....and already someone has defaced property with them! Which we do not endorse. At all. Like ever. Nope. Pretty sweet photo though! We'll have more of these stickers available at the opening tomorrow night!

And our good friend Dan Goodsell, a.k.a. the brains and syrup behind Mr. Toast, had a show the other night at Silverlake's Monkeyhouse Toys. Goodsell, never one to take a a break, created over 100 pieces to fill up the space. Becky, gallery assistant to the stars, was there to take some pics.

More red dots than a pimple faced teen!

Mr. Goodsell with his buffet of creations.

I think the show is up for only 2 weeks, so try your hardest to swing by Monkeyhouse Toys and check out how fun art can be when you depict breakfast foods only!

Again, swing on through tomorrow night, you won't regret it!
