Frame #7

DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com & Ronie Midfew Arts are proud to be continuing the "LOST Underground Art Project." The 7th limited edition print, celebrating the greatest "water cooler" moments from the ABC television show "LOST" is by artist Ken Taylor, and focuses on The Smoke Monster.

This is the 7th print, of an eventual set of 16, and was revealed at Rusty's Discount Pet Supplies in Studio City, CA. Fans who followed our website's clues, were able to take home limited "I Heart My Shitzu" t-shirts (as seen on character Hurley during Season 5) reinterpreted by lifestyle clothing company KR3W for free, which led them to the print's website. These prints are limited to 300, but less then 200 are available for purchase. Each is signed and numbered, 24 x 18 inches inches and only $50.

You can purchase this print at IAmTryingToBuySomeJerkeyAndASlushy.com and follow the entire project at DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com, which may involve free LOST events and stunts in your area to announce the newest print!

A great start to October...

We have two very cool shows coming to www.88point5.com and G1988 SF.

First, the awesome Allison Reimold will have her online solo show open the 10th of October. I've looked forward to this for a while since she had one of my favorite pieces from the Idiot Box show earlier this year called “The Geeks vs. McKinley High.” Check her out at...http://www.allisonreimold.com/

Here's the show flyer...

After that, we have the show Re-Up! It will open Friday, October 16th and will feature the new work of DESEO, DIA, ANGRY WOEBOTS, SCRIBE, GAIA, & MR. JAGO...

More pics to come!

Beginning to look a lot like....

The last week of September and that always is such a great time of the year - as October creeps up and Halloween starts to peer its ugly head around the corner. And for us at G1988: LA, that means it's the last week of Luke Chueh's Inferno and the rumblings of Alex Pardee's "Hiding From The Normals" are starting to be heard. I have seen a bunch of the paintings and I can genuinely say that Alex has created quite the universe for Halloween. I think it's a total no-brainer that one day Alex will be professionally designing horror characters for Hollywood (especially after his time with "Chadam" at Warner Bros. SOMEONE PUT THAT OUT!). Excited for you guys to see what he's coming up with. In the meanwhile, we'll be doing an exclusive t-shirt with Alex and director/writer Michael Dougherty for "Trick R Treat," the DVD/Blu-Ray release we'll also be celebrating with our friends next door at Golden Apple. These shirts will be super limited and released the night of the opening reception (Oct. 6), so get them while you can. Here's a tease -

Don't tell anyone I showed you yet.

Also, artist Brandi Milne is getting into the Candy Corn guzzling spirit with a print release on her website (CLICK HERE for that).

The print is called "Something Wicked" and it's a hand-signed and numbered edition of 50, at 11.5 x 11 inches on archival picture rag. AND the first 50 orders get a free bonus print (seen below).

Pretty good deal and again, we're down for anything promoting the Halloween spirit.

Way Beyond

A rare Art Fair appearance by us, but we had to do something for Beyond Eden since the concept and participating galleries seemed so cool. We usually pride ourselves on being outside the LA art bubble, but we couldn't be more proud of what we're bringing to Beyond Eden.

Taking place October 9th, 10th and 11th at the LA Municipal Gallery at Barnsdall Park, we'll be displaying new available works from Shannon Bonatakis, Ben Strawn, Scott Campbell, Lauren Gregg (who has one new painting called "Farting Falcor" - so take that snooty art fair patrons!), Krista Huot and Daniel Danger.

While we're at it...let's preview one of Scott's new Showdowns he created for Beyond Eden. THAT DAMN FAX MACHINE!

He'll have a handful more never-seen-before Showdowns and even some more new Musician Series pieces. More previews to come. Make sure you do not miss this event!

Frame #6

DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com & Ronie Midfew Arts are proud to be continuing the "LOST Underground Art Project." The 6th limited edition print, celebrating the greatest "water cooler" moments from the ABC television show "LOST" is by artist Jason Munn, and focuses on The 4-toed Statue.

This is the 6th print, of an eventual set of 16, and was revealed during the Dallas, TX stop of the Blink-182 tour, when band Fall Out Boy paid tribute to LOST. Fender created a Dharma/Batheart Bass for bassist Pete Wentz (only 3 made!), drummer Andy Hurley had a custom Dharma/FC drumhead and Wentz paid tribute to Charlie Pace and Driveshaft by dedicating "Thnx fr th Mmrs" to his former "tourmates" and writing "Not Penny's Boat" on his hand. These prints are limited to 300, but less then 200 are available for purchase. Each is hand signed and numbered, 24 x 18 inches inches and only $50. The image above the gold foot is printed in gloss, that can only be seen in certain lighting and from certain angles.

You can purchase this print at HuckFinnWasTaken.com and follow the entire project at DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com, which may involve free LOST events and stunts in your area to announce the newest print!

Admit

I'm the first to admit I'm prone to hyperbole. But not because I don't believe what I'm saying. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.

But after getting our first piece for 2010's "Under The Influence: Masters of the Universe" show, I have to say this:

Robert Burden's piece for this show is the best piece we've ever shown.

That's the truth. Battlecat has never looked so good.

The detail in this oil painting is just mind-blowing. There isn't much I can say that isn't blowing your mind right now while looking at the picture...except for this -

That's Robert next to the piece. Holy cow. Absolutely epic.

Not sure your brain can take anymore....but if it can, here's a time lapse video that Robert made showing the creation of this beast in 420 man hours! I'd pay $10 to see this in a theatre. It even has a sequel tease at the end.

I am so amped to pay tribute to He-Man and the Master of the Universe alongside Mattel in January 2010. And you should be too! Thanks to Robert to stepping everybody's game up! Going to be incredible.

OCTOBER 6th - MARK IT DOWN NOW!

The other night Alex Pardee gave his audience on Twitter (follow him - @alexpardee) a bit of a surprise, which was our first viewing of what his upcoming G1988: LA solo show is shaping up to be. And this was it -

"Hiding From The Normals" will be Alex's 1st solo show here at Gallery1988: LA (follow us on twitter - @jensenclan88) on October 6th and it is shaping up to be our biggest event of 2009. The Halloween themed show has tons of surprises in store (some include original music being produced by your favorite underground rappers and what is going to be, his words, "the biggest and most epic show of his career").

And for the opening reception on October 6th, not only will we be celebrating Alex's new body of work, we'll be celebrating Halloween a bit early, as everyone is encouraged to dress up in costume and be as scary as possible (you may even get a prize if Alex digs your threads). Cause the same night, next door at Golden Apple Comics, we'll be sponsoring the DVD/Blu-Ray release of "Trick R Treat," an INCREDIBLY scary movie from director Michael Dougherty finally seeing the light of day (how this movie got the shaft for marketing/distribution I have NO IDEA, and neither do most movie sites)! Michael, cast and crew will signing DVDs and Blu-Rays. And after you see the trailer below, I PROMISE you'll want to know more.

AND, Alex is going to have a nice little surprise to tie into the movie, cause "Trick R Treat" will be screened in our back lot that night as well. It's all pretty creepy. And awesome.

Mark your calendars now, and get your costumes ready. It's art's Halloween party with Alex Pardee and you are invited.

Things Got Weird

We were so stoked to have "Weird Al" Yankovic stop by the gallery and check out Tom Whalen's UHF Tribute print! We've all been die-hard Weird Al fans since childhood, so this was a serious star struck moment. We hope to one day actually follow through with the Weird Al Tribute we had planned for this year's Crazy 4 Cult 3-D, and we hope now that he personally has seen the cool stuff that comes out of G1988, it can one day be a reality!

Dare to be stupid.

Jeremy Nichols!

Jeremy Nichols (Portland, OR) new solo show at www.88point5.com is NOW LIVE! In his new series, Jeremy has created 15 original works, all prices at $250.00.

"In his artwork, he tries to show the near future of environments, space, humans, and animals as well as their attachment to material, and technological advances in their quest to achieve fulfillment through their artificial reality. He also tries to express the figure's psychological and sociological interactions with in their environment in a surreal manner. The figures in his images demonstrate their own search for clarity, direction, or even one's self, yet often tend to follow the leader as they float in space."

See his impressive new show now at www.88point5.com!

Jeremy will also be in our next show, "Now Playing," which opens in less than one week! See some preview pics here: http://1988movieposters.blogspot.com

Mad Max vs Johnathan Bergeron, Bonnie & Clyde vs Aaron Jasinski

We just got an image from Johnathan Bergeron (aka Johnny Crap) of his finished movie poster for "Now Playing." Johnny had "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" and took a more subtle direction, but it works perfectly with the poster! His new character looks like he belongs in the movie.

(detail)

Aaron Jasinski took a completely different approach and added a lot of his own work to his poster, which is "Bonnie and Clyde." Here's an in-progress shot from Aaron...

It's really cool to see how everyone went their own way with this project. Everything we've seen so far is amazing and I cannot wait to have all of the posters together in the gallery. We have a few more weeks, so I know we'll continue to see some great pieces come in. In the meantime, be sure to stay updated with the show blog where you can see in-progress and finished posters and directly from the participating artists...

This is the 4th print, of an eventual set of 16, and was revealed at Crumbs Bakery in LA (Larchmont) and NY (Wall Street), where workers at the store wore custom made Dharma Cupcake jumpsuits, with the needed website printed on the back. These prints are limited to 300, but less then 200 are available for purchase. Each is hand signed and numbered, 24 x 18 inches inches and only $50.

She's A Lady

With our new Whalen Dragon's Lair print and Perillo Dig Dug print now available, we wanted to tell you about a new video game themed giclee print from Misha, that we just got in the gallery.

You might remember Misha's last video game themed print sold it's way through 2 editions, found itself in People Magazine and has a little famous baby staring at it everyday. Well, this new print "Our Lady Of The Arcade," is just as awesome. Depicting Ms. Pac Man as the holy being she is, this print is 8.5 x 11 inches, signed and numbered in an edition of 50 and is only $50.

Pick it up before the ghosts get you. You can email us at gallery1988@aol.com or call us at (323) 937 - 7088 to order. We only have a few.

W.

We're proud to announce Gray Haddock as the winner of our Crazy 4 Cult 3-D Tim Doyle poster contest. A few applicants actually got all of the movie references correct, so we printed them out and allowed my dog, Benjamin, to choose the winning email. So Benjamin likes Gray! If you're looking for the key and answers, check out last month's blog entry archive, under the name "Sus-tense."

Congrats Gray! And look out for next year's contest!
