Judge and Juri

It's Halloween night and our second ever 88point5.com show is up and running. Juri Ueda of Osaka, Japan is the focus this time with her solo exhibit "Tiny Tunes," and she SUPER delivered. Exhibiting 15 brand new pieces, all $350 or cheaper AND some are framed, is totally unheard of for an international artist with this great of output. I really encourage you to check out the full show and know these look even better in person. I put a serious stamp of approval on this show. And listen, I know that nobody will be looking through it tonight, I get it. But what better way to wind down a Halloween night, and maybe drunk-impulse buy a piece of art, than with Juri and 88point5? Especially if you're dressed up as a cat, or a sexy nurse, or Freddy Krueger, or Condoleezza Rice, or a a sexy Condoleezza Rice. Either way, take a look, it's a proud day for 88point5.

CLICK ON WWW.88POINT5.COM to take look, Condoleezza.

Countdown Until Novemeber 1st!

Ok, not really. But I'm counting down to November 1st. Why? Because we have our pre-holiday sale.

The way we see it - it's either gonna be time to celebrate (15% off) or time to address the recession (15% off), but either way...THE CUSTOMER WINS. 15% off EVERYTHING in inventory starting November 1st. The only thing excluded are the shows that open in November (It Wanders West in LA, Juri Ueda on 88.5 and Imaginary Friends in SF) and prints released in November. ANYTHING else that's on gallery1988.com, 88point5.com or stuff88.com is ripe for the discount. So do not hesitate to finally pick up that piece or print you've been contemplating, but wanted to see how the election turned out. Either way, we have your back. We may be in Canada, but we will still have your back. Way back.

And announcing a print release...

Releasing November 1st...it's FINALLY here.

Sean Clarity
"Buffer Overflow"
15 x 20 inches

signed and numbered edition of 100
$100.00

Send us an email at gallery1988@aol.com or call us at (323) 937 - 7088 to purchase this print. I get a few emails a day on this print, so we're stoked to finally have it here. It looks SOOOO GOOD. One of the best printed by Katie and Irma up at our SF location, and the first up in the Crazy4Cult print releases...

Hee Hee Jodee

Another day, another intro to a brand new artist to 1988 with blog exclusive affordable artwork!

This one might be our best yet, with Australian artist Jodee Knowles. The 24 year-old has an insanely unique style and dropped some pieces off with us during her recent visit to LA. I swear these things are awesome in person, with such an alluring vibe to the faces. We expect BIG things from Jodee. Each piece is beautifully framed and matted in a gold vitange-seeming frame (with glass), which you can see in the pics as well.

"An Appalling Emptiness"
$780.00
ink on paper
23 x 17 inches, framed

"This Is The Path"
$550.00
ink on paper
13 x 17 inches, framed

"This Is The Line"
$780.00
ink on paper
16 x 20 inches, framed

If you are interested in any of these pieces, feel free to call us at (323) 937 -7088 or email us at gallery1988@aol.com.

As we wind up on the Cover Band show, I realized a lot of these covers have sold! It really was such a fun, different show and we're looking forward to revisiting it some time in the future. But I also realized that Justin Kalmen's album cover, his take on the Prince classic "Purple Rain" is still available.

You can see Justin turned the Prince classic into a record cover for a whole new band, "Demon Joy Kill Club," and their release "Purple Pain." You can see the whole band of misfits right there on the cover, but even cooler? You can listen to the original music that Justin created for this band! YES, this band is now making music! They cover "When The Doves Cry," but there's also insane original music by the band, which in reality is JUST Justin playing and singing everything. Which is bonkers.

Go to www.myspace.com/demonjoykillclub to listen to the band's music! And don't say I didn't warn you. The album cover is still available, and I'm pretty sure they might be able to play Bar Mitzvahs.

We Are A Million Bits

It gets no better. I think I'll be on a 7 day high, based off the release of Rockstar Games' Weds. release of "Midnight Club: Los Angeles," not just cause it's an amazing game for my PS3...

...but because it's an almost perfect rendering of the Los Angeles, the city I've lived in my whole life. Whether it's Amoeba Records or The Standard Hotel on Sunset, Mann's Chinese on Hollywood, or Staples Center downtown - if it's a stand out - it's in the game. Which brings me to my high. Right there, snuggled on the corner of Melrose and La Brea, across the street from the Hollywood landmark Pink's Hot Dogs, is GALLERY 1988! I was playing last night, and you couldn't imagine my shock to see this...(P.S. My girlfriend and I took photos off the screen from our phones)

I mean, that might be the coolest thing in the entire world! You can even see picture frames inside! For reals...

And shouts out to El Maz and Slick, as both have graffiti represented in the game as well. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed.

But to be honest, it's not the first time I may have made it in to a video game...

Use the code "CALIFORNIA" - and everyone's kinda-favorite gallery owner is available for signing in the free agent pool. Check out the number on my jersey too, a year before the gallery opened I was still repping the number. And yes, I did ask the game developers to give me the tight 80's shorts and goggles. And no, I have no idea why they gave me such a small head.

And with that...

They Made A PORNO

Censorship has always seemed to shock me. The line of indecent material seems so blurry, I'm not sure how anyone is able to decipher what is "lewd," "dirty" or "unacceptable," and what is not. For example, I find a lot of the things that Ann Coulter says to be censor-worthy (and I don't mean her political beliefs, I mean instances like when she un-ironically called John Edwards a "faggot"), yet I think Sarah Silverman should basically be allowed to say whatever she wants....cause she's joking! I know my theory isn't going to stand up to any debate - cause it's basically just saying, "If you're joking (i.e. Howard Stern, George Carlin, etc.) you should be able to freely move around in the name of satire and society based commentary, but if you're just doing it in hate (i.e. Bill O'Reilly, Larry the Cable Guy, etc.) I think we should take away your rights - and that's a crazy stance. But I have it. And the only reason I bring this up is because 1988 homies Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier have their newest film opening October 31st and it seems the title and poster have been causing quite a stir. First....they were banned from using this poster, which IS allowed to be used in Canada...

...and once that got banned, the US got this....

Which OK, I kinda get. I mean, I'm cool with the first one, but I understand why maybe someone could get the first one banned. But NOW....we're dealing with people banning the posters or ads because the word "Porno" is in the title. SOOOOO, people are pulling the ads down AND FOX isn't allowing commercials to run during the World Series because of the title. And I know it's all a taste thing, and it depends on if you have a family, etc....but because of the word "Porno?" Off the top of my head, I would argue that all those Axe Body Spray commercials are 7 million times worse, but whatever. I kinda just wanted to advertise Kevin and Scott's movie...so there you go.

Back to art - after Ruel Pascual's success a few days ago here on the blog with his 3 new pieces (2 sold, 1 on hold), we figured we'd follow up with some blog exclusive new pieces from LA artist Misha that are so sweet. Through The Wire

Not only did Luke Chueh do the cover for the upcoming Fall Out Boy album, "Folie a Deux," but with point guard G1988 as art director (gallery version of Tony Parker if you will) - you knew other favs were gonna pop up too.

As seen on ITunes this week, artist Ken Garduno created the image for the band's 3rd ITunes release, "What A Catch, Donnie," seen below...

And rumor has it that this drawing is gonna show up on some of the band's t-shirt merch too! The album's release date was pushed back to mid-December, so keep an eye to the blog to see what other artists find their way into the artwork!!!

One Amongst...

A stragler from our Cover Band show arrived this week and I love it so much that I had to post it on the blog to make sure it gets seen. It's Jeremy Tinder's take on Jackson Browne "The Pretender" and it's awesome....! Here's the original cover...

And here's what Mr. Tinder did to it...

It actually is one of my favorites in the show (although added late), and if one of you don't buy it, I'm tempted. Reminds of a Muppety version of Dan Clowes - and that's a good thing. It's only $300.00 and UPDATE (10/15/08) - it has officially SOLD. No cover for me.

Hello Ruel.

My favorite time of the year for weather. That totally confused state where the sun is shining on one side of the street, yet the other side is overcast and 65 degrees. Last night the Art Rally opened in SF and from what I hear and see in pics, that thing was packed to the gills. Lots of incredible artwork still available by CLICKING HERE. And we did get the cover of the SF Weekly Arts and Entertainment section, which is great to see that scary monster stuffed animals and customized vinyl toys can get peoples' minds off the idea that people think Obama is "Arab."

Every once in a while we like to debut artists to the 1988 crowd through the blog, and going off what's happened in the past, it's usually a great start (Rude and Mark Brown were our first two to get the blog treatment). And now, we'd like to introduce you to Ruel Pascual. Ruel is in the animation and video game industry and will be showing his more personal work at Gallery 1988 in group shows during 2009, and we're really excited to finally show his work off. For his day job, he's worked on Kung-Fu Panda's character animation and Pixar's Monsters Inc. 3-D website, but also video games like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Golden Axe and Area 51. You'll be seeing more of him in 2009, especially now that he's on the blog and that seems to be a favorite for galleries to pick new artists from, and here's three three to kick it off...get em while they're cheap.

Ruel Pascual
"The Playground"
11 x 14 inches, framed

$550.00

Ruel Pascual

Who Framed Tons of Records?

Getting 17 boxes from the frame shop took up most of our day, but not as much as we predicted really. Enough to give you some more preview pics of tomorrow nights show at the LA gallery, which opens Tuesday night, 7 - 10 PM. Those just tuning in, the show is called "Cover Band" - and over 50 artists took classic album covers and went to town to create brand new pieces of art. Seeing them all in frames is pretty awesome...but here's some more to get you ready for tomorrow...

Those who got our reminder email this morning saw this gem from Mark Brown, who took his liberties on Nirvana's "Nevermind" (kinda like what Courtney Love is doing now, but cool and respectful).

Kiersten Essenpreis is slowly becoming one of my favs, especially after her two Pee Wee masterpieces in Crazy 4 Cult 2. This time the Ramones get into the Halloween spirit.

Phoneticontrol, of PFOM fame, made a visit to Paul's Boutique, getting us amped for the Jan 2009 tribute show we're holding right here at G1988: LA.

One of my favs from the show, Israel Sanchez is one of many artists who picked a Beatles album. But he is the only person who referenced Yoko. BEATLES - DO THIS!

Can't wait for you guys to see this show, very fun and affordable - all while keeping a really upbeat attitude during what are obviously shitty times all around us.

Let's just smile?
