Kevin Smith RADIO!!!

Ok, this is NOT SAFE FOR WORK, but I sat down with Kevin Smith and his wife Jennifer Schwalbach for their daily radio show, Plus One Per Diem. We talk Crazy 4 Cult, Gallery1988, Joe Francis, Turntable.fm, Olly Moss, Greg Simkins, Luke Chueh, my dead rap career, writing pro wrestling, my possible work addiction and Ashley Madison. It's all over the place, but really fun. Also, we revealed some 2012 schedule secrets. Click the picture below and listen to the July 1st archive program if you have seasoned ears.

Thanks G4!

SOME REAL GEMS IN THIS ONE!

I say if you don't like art, you're a horrible human.
I compare the gallery to "Field Of Dreams" (???)
Kevin Smith calls himself a "Misha completionist."
Rich Pelligrino continues to be my favorite, super genuine interviewee.
Wait, maybe Ayami is my favorite, super genuine interviewee. OK, it's a tie.
Kevin calls it the best year yet. And "It's Jensen's world, he just lets me live in it" might end up on my tombstone.
Scott Listfield says super nice stuff...thank you, sir.
And YUP, we got a book deal. More on that down the road....

Fire Works

Cult is coming, and the heat is undeniable (I mean...Pee-Wee Herman tweeted about it!). The pieces delivered are hands down the best we've gotten in the history of this show. To be honest, I'm a little shocked. We so honored and thankful that all these artists really stepped it up and delivered some of their most impressive work. Which is the perfect lead-in for another sneak peek.

One of my personal favorite artists, Shannon Bonatakis, depicts everyone's favorite slacker, Enid from "Ghost World." Shannon was quietly become a sure-fire seller over the past 2 years, and we can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve for the rest of 2010.

First-time Cult-ers, art team APAK delivered their take on Loompa Land, which seems like a no-brainer for their incredible style. So happy to have them involved in this show.

Kevin Tong gives us his Rushmore inspired screen print, which has so much detail! One of my favorite films highlights young Max's varied talents and club participation. This is awesome!

Augie Pagan lines up The Usual Suspects in what is easily one of the smartest and funniest pieces in Crazy 4 Cult history. I won't ruin all the references, but if you're a film buff, you should be able to get most of them. CHE!!

AND HERE'S THE EVITE KIDS! Remember this Friday night, 7-10 PM is the opening reception. Come party with us and Kevin Smith 7 Scott Mosier, and many other surprises!

Kevin Smith x Scott Mosier x Scott Campbell

A lot of people have been emailing and asking more about the SMart show this Friday night with out hosts Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier. And to explain it better, to illustrate the idea of artists taking the transcripts from Kevin and Scott's podcast, the SModcast, I figure we'd give you the dialogue from the episode, then follow it up with one of the two pieces Scott Campbell came up with. A prime example. So here's the text, which was heard both on the podcast, and printed in the new Kevin Smith...

SMODCAST #42 - Kevin the Angel tells Scott Mosier that Scott is to be the Father of the next coming of Christ.

Kevin Smith: An angel appeared to you and he looks like me. He’s like, “Hey man.”
Scott Mosier: I’m like, “What are you doing?”
KS: “What do you mean, ‘What am I doing?’”
SM: How angelic are you? Are you floating? If you’re just standing at the foot
of my bed in a white robe…
KS: No, I’m dressed like this, but I have a halo.
SM: Like tinfoil?
KS: No, it’s hovering.
SM: There would have to be something about you.
KS: I’m the angel Gabriel. You’re you. [Yells] “Hey man, wake up!”
SM: “Why are you so aggressive?”
KS: “I’m just happy. I’m here to deliver the good news. The gospel!” Oh wait,
Alex has got to sleep through it… it’s an angel thing.
SM: “Yeah but I’m half asleep too. You don’t have to yell.”
KS: “Well, wake up. I’ve got big news. This is important.”
SM: “Alright, I’m right here.”
KS: “You know your lady is having a baby right?”
SM: “Yeah?”
KS: “You know that baby is not yours?”
SM: “Er, that’s what I hear.”
KS: “Who’s baby is that?”
SM: “I don’t know.”
KS: “Take a guess.”
SM: “Yours?”
KS: “No man, I’m an angel. We don’t have sexual organs. I don’t have a di*k.
It’s f*cked up, wanna see?”
SM: “No. Erm, I don’t know.”
KS: “It’s God’s baby. Did that f*cking blow your hair back? It’s God’s baby in
your lady’s tummy!”
SM: “It does.” At this point isn’t that the anti-Christ? Isn’t that the second
coming?
KS: Well no, there’s a difference between those two things. There’s an anti-
Christ and there’s a second coming. So let’s say this is the second coming.
“Hell sh*t, yeah! It’s the second coming man!”
SM: Yeah, but isn’t the second coming like he’s coming to bring us peanut
butter jelly sandwiches?
KS: Actually the second coming, they say that he returns as a lion, not a
lamb. First time he came as a lamb. Which was why he was in the f*cking
trough in a stable, makes sense. But he says, “When I come back I’m coming
back as a lion not a lamb.” So actually he wouldn’t come back as a baby I
don’t think, he’d come back as a man. He’d come down as Jesus, as the Jesus
we all know from pictures.
SM: He’d just take the elevator down?
KS: No, he wouldn’t need an elevator. He’s Jesus. But the angel’s like, “Yeah,
we were going to send him down as a lion not a lamb, but we figured why
not make him a lamb again. Worked out so well the first time.”
SM: So he’s the second lamb?
KS: Yeah, he’s the second lamb. The lamb of God. “Your old lady is carrying
God and that God-baby is going to grow up to be God-man — not to be
confused with Batman or Superman — but God-man. He will fight his archnemesis
The Joker. No, the anti-Christ. So you cool with this? I guess we
should’ve asked you before but…”
SM: “Yeah, you’re not really giving me a choice.”
KS: “Nah, well this is America.”
SM: “We didn’t want kids. Why didn’t you pick someone who wanted
children?”
KS: “Because, it makes a bigger profound statement.”

And here is what Scott Campbell, a genius, created.

You guys gotta stop by...and listen to SModcast free on iTunes or on the Internet! And listen to Kevin sit in all week with Kevin & Bean on KROQ 106.7 FM!

SModweek!

The Gallery1988: LA crew has been looking forward to this week all year! Friday night, our gallery will play host to "SMart: Artwork Inspired By Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SModcast." If you don't know about SModcast, no worries, because just like with everything I know nothing about....I can teach you....through Wikipedia.

-------
SModcast is a weekly podcast featuring filmmaker Kevin Smith and his long time producer partner Scott Mosier, although guests occasionally feature. Released each Sunday night, the episodes are generally one hour in length and feature Smith and Mosier discussing current events and other non-sequitur topics. The name was derived from taking the first letters of "Smith" and "Mosier" and replacing the "P" in "Podcast". The podcast is distributed through Smith's entertainment website Quick Stop Entertainment. New episodes are made available for download there each Sunday night or Monday morning, and are then released through the RSS feed the following Friday in order to ease bandwidth strains on the Quickstop Entertainment.
-------

And they've been doing it quite some time, as they are currently about to release episode #96. And this is not your father's podcast (cause your Dad LOVES podcasts). These are dirty, real, free and tremendously funny. Topics like how long it would take for Kevin to eventually make a sexual advance on Scott if they were stuck on the LOST island, how people would react if Jesus came back to fight Osama Bin Laden, what Hitler's dog was probably like and how one might confront a member of 80's rock band Foreigner if you were to see him at the supermarket are brought up on the program with extreme delight. And Titan Publishing just released "Shootin' the Sh*t with Kevin Smith: The Best Of SModcast," which takes some of the show's best bits and transcribes them into the written word. So to celebrate the book release and Kevin's Q & A event at the Orpheum Saturday night, we enlisted 25 artists to take these transcribed SMod moments and turn them into original paintings and prints for display and purchase. "SMart," hosted by Kevin and Scott, is a one-night event at G1988: LA, this Friday, Oct. 23rd from 7-11 PM and has spawned some amazing pieces. And we're excited to see the SMod-inspired pieces from:

Tom Whalen
Daniel Elson
Scott Campbell
Andrew Wilson
Allison Reimold
Dave MacDowell
Jim Horwat
Israel Sanchez
David Eichenberger
Lesley Reppeteaux
Kiersten Essenpreis
Danielle Rizzolo
Ben Walker
Joey Spiotto
NC Winters
Roland Tamayo
Scott Derby
Tom Haubrick
Dan Santat
Misha
Sean Clarity
Gideon Boomer
and 3 lucky submission winners...
Travis Kotzebue
Jen Brazas
& Razzah Wunderbar!

And one more artist Dave Perillo, who's contribution below is a depiction of SModcast episode #38, where Kevin and Scott talk about getting VERY drunk and attempting to ride It's A Small World at Disneyland (and running into some problems because of Kevin's weight).

Do yourself a favor, go over to iTunes or Quick Stop Entertainment by CLICKING HERE (if foul language and adult themes don't offend you - p.s. That's a warning!) and check out some episodes of SModcast before the event this Friday night.

Kevin will also be on KROQ all week, sitting in with Kevin and Bean, and also on G4's "Attack of the Show" tonight promoting the week of KS festivities.

We'll be doing updates all week for "SMart" - so stay tuned, and come hang with Kevin, Scott and the G1988: LA gang on Friday night.

Something For Your Sunday

This is announced.

More on that soon.

And our SMart Show with Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier is this coming Friday. We'll be full speed on that hyping that up next week, as 25 artists will be taking aim at Kevin and Scott's popular podcast series, SModcast. If you are not aware of SModcast, it's hilarious, free on Itunes or the Internet, and super dirty (so don't say we didn't warn you). We'll break down the artists participating and give you some previews, etc. throughout next week. And we obviously suggest coming by Friday night, 7-10 PM, as Kevin and Scott will be in the house, signing, talking and also celebrating the release of Kevin's new book, "Shootin' The Sh*t With Kevin Smith," which transcribes a lot of greatest hits from SModcast. Going to be a lot of fun, leading up to one of Kevin's infamous Q&A evenings the next night at the Orpheum. It's a View Askew weekend and we're happy to be a part of it.

Again, more on all this SOON!

Last night...

Yeah, so I wasn't able to take any pictures, cause we never really stopped working last night to take one. But am hoping some good pictures start to pop up on the interwebs today that I can show off. Especially of 2cents in-gallery installation. It was one of our print surprises, but 2cents did it again, after last year's incredibly successful portraits (CLICK HERE to see those). This year he picked famous cult objects. Each of these prints are limited to 40 (we're close to selling out on some and have to start the day with some serious inventory counting), are signed and numbered and are just $25 each. But here they are...

The Bike

The Trap

The Lips

The Hearse

The Button

The Stapler

Thanks to these prints and around 1,000 attendees, this year's Crazy 4 Cult first night was one of our most successful opening receptions EVER. It was awesome to see people still buying art that speaks to them, even though economic times aren't what they were for Crazy 4 Cult in 2008.

You can now sell ALL the artwork, and see what's still available, by CLICKING HERE.

We want to thank every artist who participated in this year's show, as probably about 100 people came up to us at some point last night and commented on how everyone REALLY stepped it up this year. When another now-mangled theme show hit it's third year, we sat back and watched as artists admitted they were out of ideas and thought the concept became stale. With Crazy 4 Cult 3-D, it proved this show just gets better and better - and we only have the artists to thank for that. This had the best artwork delivered yet. THANK YOU all so much.

Also big thanks to Kevin Smith (a co-creator of this art show), who's spirit we felt in the gallery, although he was shooting a film in NY, our friends at SlashFIlm.com, KROQ's Kevin, Bean and Ralph Garman and comedian Paul Scheer, along with the many others who promoted (and twittered their brains off about) the show all day with us!

Here's to Crazy FOUR Cult in 2010.

They Made A PORNO

Censorship has always seemed to shock me. The line of indecent material seems so blurry, I'm not sure how anyone is able to decipher what is "lewd," "dirty" or "unacceptable," and what is not. For example, I find a lot of the things that Ann Coulter says to be censor-worthy (and I don't mean her political beliefs, I mean instances like when she un-ironically called John Edwards a "faggot"), yet I think Sarah Silverman should basically be allowed to say whatever she wants....cause she's joking! I know my theory isn't going to stand up to any debate - cause it's basically just saying, "If you're joking (i.e. Howard Stern, George Carlin, etc.) you should be able to freely move around in the name of satire and society based commentary, but if you're just doing it in hate (i.e. Bill O'Reilly, Larry the Cable Guy, etc.) I think we should take away your rights - and that's a crazy stance. But I have it. And the only reason I bring this up is because 1988 homies Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier have their newest film opening October 31st and it seems the title and poster have been causing quite a stir. First....they were banned from using this poster, which IS allowed to be used in Canada...

...and once that got banned, the US got this....

Which OK, I kinda get. I mean, I'm cool with the first one, but I understand why maybe someone could get the first one banned. But NOW....we're dealing with people banning the posters or ads because the word "Porno" is in the title. SOOOOO, people are pulling the ads down AND FOX isn't allowing commercials to run during the World Series because of the title. And I know it's all a taste thing, and it depends on if you have a family, etc....but because of the word "Porno?" Off the top of my head, I would argue that all those Axe Body Spray commercials are 7 million times worse, but whatever. I kinda just wanted to advertise Kevin and Scott's movie...so there you go.

Back to art - after Ruel Pascual's success a few days ago here on the blog with his 3 new pieces (2 sold, 1 on hold), we figured we'd follow up with some blog exclusive new pieces from LA artist Misha that are so sweet. These pieces from Misha are all influenced by vintage 8-bit video games, part of a series she's been working on since 2005 (p.s. all the rest are SOLD). So break out the Power Pad and check these insanely affordable pieces out...

Misha
"Monkey Love - Game Over For Mario"
12 x 12 inches
acrylic on canvas
$550.00

Misha
"Painting the Roses Red"
5 x 7 inches, framed
acrylic on canvas
$250.00
SOLD

Misha
"Drink Me"
5 x 7 inches, framed
acrylic on canvas
$250.00

Misha
"Eat Me"
5 x 7 inches, framed

Bogged

I still can't get any time to do a serious info-packed blog post as Crazy 4 Cult is as just as busy a few days in as we were at the opening. So all the good, really deep, Kite-Runner-ish writing will have to wait for another day. Till then, pics and press.

Last year G4 won a Webby for their coverage of Crazy 4 Cult, this year they won my heart. That opening shot of Blair being absolutely attacked by people around her is how I felt all night. I'm happy someone caught the chaos of being near the register. Brandon Bird should get his own show on G4. No better time than now to announce that the Birdman will have his first ever solo show at 1988: LA next year. Here's to hoping he is working on it right now.

CLICK HERE FOR Variety's coverage of hanging out at the gallery before the show opened.

Some pics from our friend, the watermarked Wire Image...

I mean, that looks like a can of sardines.

And another can.

Kevin and Scott.

The Mosier.

Pete Wentz swung by and made me smile for cameras like an idiot....

...then wore PlasticGod's sunglasses and stole my shitty smile.

And Kevin alone.

I wish I could get more creative right now with the blog, but after these busy days I just get too tired to go to in depth. I will though, especially with some prints on the horizon that will make you freak out.

Admired From Afar Galaxy

In what has to be one of the coolest things ever, it seems David Macdowell's piece for Crazy 4 Cult II was not only mentioned on the blog of one star that's depicted in the painting (Kevin Smith), but now it has caught the attention of Stand By Me, and Star Trek, star Wil Wheaton. CLICK HERE to read his entry on the painting below.

Next up? Does Jerry O' Connell have a blog? Let's keep this thing going.

Fastest Animal

Almost there! Basically half the show is hung, and we're gearing up for Friday's opening gala for Crazy 4 Cult 2: This Time It's Personal with every hand on deck. I feel like I may have said this once before for the Stan Lee show, so my credibility might be up there with those John Edwards VP hopes, but I do genuinely think this is the best show we've ever had in LA. The work is just so good, every box I open sets a brand new standard. I mean, we're building a temporary wall in the gallery to house this much work! And this is why we cherish our themed group shows at 1988 so much. Other similar shows are great events or parties, but we really feel like we create an art show over everything else. And this Crazy 4 Cult will prove it. Hands down, thumbs up. Oh, don't believe me? Then feast your eyes on the funniest painting I have ever seen.

Brandon Bird's "I Am Night" which references Philip Seymour Hoffman's turn as a male nurse in the underrated PTA nod to the San Fernando Valley, "Magnolia." And yes, this kid is wearing one of those cheap Thirfty Drug Store Halloween costumes to be Mr. Hoffman, as if they made those. I am actually laughing right now.

Oh, so I did a podcast to promote the show with 1988 friends Gariana and Grae (www.popcornmafia.com) and you can listen to it by CLICKING HERE. I think it's funny, but I also have serious cinematic beliefs (which you'll hear now) and made a lot of jokes about young actresses (yes, that young. And yes, I'm joking).

And speaking of talking, our Lord and Savior Kevin Smith will be on Kevin and Bean (which I call Kevin, Bean & Ralph Garmen due to my love for that man) on KROQ Friday morning at 7:20 AM. The fact that Kevin is waking up at 7:20 to promote the show on a day he knows he'll be shooting the shit till late here at the gallery shows you want kind of guy he his, and the love he has for the art. Anyway, please listen cause I know he'll make you laugh way more than my podcast appearance.

It was cool...

Today is the last day of our AintItCool.com contest, where you can send in your cult-movie inspired submissions, and a group of judges (we're still trying to get Judge Dredd involved) will select one winner to be included in the actual Crazy 4 Cult 2 show, as well as get a nice prize package of goodies. So if you've been waiting to send in your submission, make sure to get it in today. We've gotten almost 100 entries, so this is gonna be a fun one to narrow down. We'll be posting the finalists next week, and we'd love to hear your opinions.

In the meanwhile....they're coming...

I'm focused, man.

Feeling great today. Not sure if it's the full-swinging weekend, the beautiful weather, the fact I'm seeing Dark Knight tomorrow, or just the sound of Melrose traffic, but I'm smiling and amped to celebrate the weekend, forcing me into revealing some of our secrets we got coming up in the next few weeks.

I held this one back yesterday because I was just bombarding you with G1988 Comic Con info, but we'll also be debuting a brand new customized Hot Wheel van at Comic Con, viewable at the Mattel booth. Just to remind you, artists were given this blank HW van to work with and told to do whatever they want to it...

And we had some incredible results at the TOYS show earlier this year. But for Comic Con we decided to go to the big gun, the head honcho of toy customization, Doktor A, and ask him to customize the van for an unveiling at Comic Con. And unveiling, unschmailing. I wanted to give you a glimpse into the INCREDIBLE job the good Dok did here on the blog first!

It is the coolest thing I've ever seen. And you will be able to see it up and close and personal at Comic Con!

And while I'm on spoiling surprises...

"Crazy 4 Cult II: This Time It's Personal" is now right around the corner, opening Friday night, August 22, from 7-11 PM. Hosted again by the minds behind Clerks, Mallrats and the soon to offend you, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, this show is totally insane. Boasting over a 100 artists, including 1988 newcomers Sas and Colin Christian, this will be one for the ages, as we're holding onto the line-up (our best ever me thinks) for just a little while longer. It will shock your eyeballs. But why not tease you with a piece now? From 1988 fav Ken Keirns, paying homage to a movie that wasn't depicted last year, but is near and dear to everyones' hearts, "Heathers."

"Transfer to Washington. Transfer to Jefferson. No one at Westerberg is going to let you play their reindeer games."

I better get off the blog before I ruin anything else. Hope your day is as good as mine.

We're all WINNERS with VERY long blog posts!

So, off the heels of the Freddi C. / J. Shea show in SF, we're ready to announce the winners of the Cult Movie poster contest here in LA. Let's first go over what the Grand Prize winnger gets:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

A signed Crazy 4 Cult poster by some of our attendees -

Top row - Michael Rapaport (True Romance, Higher Learning, etc.), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Snakes on a Plane, everything), Richard Kelley (writer/director of Donnie Darko)
Bottom row - Edgar Wright (writer/director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), Scott Mosier (producer of Clerks, Mallrats) and Kevin Smith (writer/director of Clerks, Mallrats, etc.)

Pretty gosh darn serious there. The winner also gets Artist Proof's of both the Greg Simkins "Ed's Losing" print and the Matt Dangler Willy Wonka print (both available, or going to be available, on crazy4cult.com).

We also selected 4 runners-up, who did get all the movies correct, but were not the ONE selected (dare I say "Our Neo"). We did another drawing, and these 4 people will win one, or both, of these Kevin Smith/View Askew products:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Randall Mooby's Shirt

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Mooby's Visor

OK, so there were 28 movies represented on the poster, which I would list here, but I find very boring. If you want the list, send me an email.

8 people got all 28 movies in their answer and Brian Librot was the email we selected! (P.S. this is the first time these winners will find out, as I haven't emailed them yet). The Runners-Up are Kieron Menzies, Max V., Emily Wong and Jesse Yu.

CONGRATS to all our winners!

The press is still reeling in from Crazy 4 Cult, as well as just the gallery in general. Check out this really great paparzzi picture of Nicky Hilton moving into her new house carrying Misha's Mario Tea Party piece she picked up from G1988.

"Click HERE for MTV's article." Some great pics there too. I spot Isaac Pierro, Misha and Peter Gronquist (who will be married this weekend, CONGRATS!).

"Click HERE for G4's TV segment."

And here's a picture of Zak Knutson, the donkey f*cker from "Clerks 2," pointing this himself in Misha's "Mooby's Last Supper."

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It was cool to see him excited to be "immortilized" (his words) in a painting. The banging a donkey thing is just a detail.

This week will begin the sneak peeks at pieces for our next show in LA, "The Guys' Guys," which will feature artwork from Matt "Lebron" Dangler, Travis Lampe, Roland Tamayo, Zach Johnsen, Rich Tuzon, Jose Emroca Flores, Parskid, Andrew Wilson, Peter Taylor and The (Dave) Chung! This puppu will open August 14 and trust me when I say these guys are stepping it up! But for now....I'm going to go breathe.

Whatever, dude.

I don't really know what to say. I'm so tired and to think I'm not gonna give a detailed blog post the day after what is hands down the coolest and most ridiculous opening of our existence bothers me tremendously, but you know what else bothers me? Not sleeping. And my Acid Reflux. Which makes me sound like I'm 74 years old. I haven't had time to download pictures, but I'm sure a Google search tomorrow will find you better pics than I took. And I know VinylPulse should be posting their recap, pictures and video soon. But here's the rundown in the least amount of words possible:

*estimated 2,500 people

Also, Kevin Smith, Scott Mosier, Jason Mewes, the dude who bangs a donkey in Clerks 2, Edgar Wright, Richard Kelley, James Duvall, Ralph Garman of Joe Schmo (a G1988 FAVORITE), lead singer of Alkaline Trio all swung through and hung out, which was very cool to see. But beating that is the appearance of Samuel L. Jackson in the gallery today. All I'll say is whoever wins the signed Chris Lee poster is a serious WINNER. Oh which reminds me, you have until tomorrow to send your answers in.

I'll start linking press (G4, MTV, Reelz Channel, LA Weekly, assorted blogs, Getty Images, etc) in the next few days and posting my pictures which include artists and the directors of the films they remixed together, which is ill. That's it for now.

I just want to thank Kevin and Scott for just being good dudes. I mean, they could easily be a-holes, but seeing the excitement on their faces when they first saw the artwork, especially the pieces which reflect their movies, was really a new emotion for me. I'm so used to Hollywood types being jerks and awful people, it was a breath of fresh air. Made me actually want to utilize my film degree, then I remember my last Hollywood job of getting Stephen Baldwin a Schwinn from Reseda on the set of Flintstones II and him calling me a douche bag for not getting him a horn (although he didn't ask for one), driving back to Reseda (which was an hour away), but realizing he had went home when I returned, and then him never asking for the horn ever again. So I'm guessing his new religion must forgive him for berating unpaid 19 year old interns, but encourage bike sales-related mind reading.

I digress. Thank you to everyone who made it out and keep this in mind. This show is annual.
