New Print!

Matt Dangler's opening last night was a lot of fun! We have one new print available (also happens to be my favorite painting from the show)...

Matt Dangler
"Sentinels of Serenity" Print
giclee print on Epson Velvet paper
9 x 12 inches
limited edition of 30
signed and numbered
$70.00 unframed

And I also wanted to show you the model for Matt's large painting, "The Oracle." It's his cousin, Kyllian, and he did an amazing job capturing her face. People recognized her immediately.

If you haven't seen the entire show yet, check it out here. We also added some detail shots of "The Oracle"...

http://1988mattdangler.blogspot.com

But you should try to stop by in person because these pieces are stunning and it's really hard to capture the texture with a digital camera. The show runs through June 20th at G1988 San Francisco.

Countdown - One more day

We all almost ready for Matt Dangler's new solo show in SF. I picked Matt up at the airport this afternoon and we went straight to the gallery to finish installing. I have some pics for you lucky blog readers...

"Moving On"

"There's No Place Like Om"

"Sniftor's Snowmate"

Detail from "The Oracle"

These pictures from my crappy little camera do not do these paintings justice. They are SO GOOD in person. The pics from the preview are much better, so stay tuned for that tomorrow.

Matt will also have one new print available of his new piece "Sentinels of Serenity," limited to 30 that will be released at the opening reception tomorrow night from 7-10PM. Be sure to make it out because there are only 30, so they'll sell out fast!

Matt Dangler, "Searching For Satori" May 29 - June 20th. Opening reception tomorrow night from 7-10PM.

Stormed In

The Quiet Storm opening reception has come and gone - and it really was a fun and busy night. Not so much for me, as I could only make it to 9:15, nursing what might be the worst infection of my life. The last few days I've been confined to my bed - and it's become so bad - I was tested for Swine Flu yesterday. Good news is...I don't have it. Bad news, that doesn't make it go away. But here's a picture of Roland, Krista and Scott, who all attended the opening reception...

The show is really impressive. You can check it all out by CLICKING HERE.

And with G1988: SF opening their Matt Dangler solo show tomorrow, the hits don't stop.

Speaking of...

Our next show at Gallery1988: LA is a special engagement solo show with SF artist Reuben Rude. I'm a huge Reuben fan and am excited to see what he's come up with to fill the LA gallery.

And in an announcement we'll explain more at a later date...during the Reuben Rude exhibition, spend some special time with artist Greg Simkins...

More on that later...

I'm in love

I've been so focused on our Matt Dangler show opening in San Francisco this Friday, that I just got to see all of the Quiet Storm pieces in our LA show that opens tonight. Ummm... my absolute favorite Roland Tamayo piece of all time...

Roland Tamayo "Port"

Wow, it is gorgeous! I was blown away when I saw it this afternoon. I wish I could see this show in person :( If you're in LA, you have to go to this show! It looks amazing! You can see all the details below or visit the website for more info... www.gallery1988.com

Rolandorial

Slowly creeping into Memorial Day, we've have had a pretty surreal weekend at the gallery while installing "Quiet Storm." A woman was leaning against our front panel window, when her boyfriend bearhugged her into the glass - hence smashing it and breaking the entire window. We had JUST left the gallery, so we didn't see it first hand, as it sound more like a scene from "Walker, Texas Ranger" than reality, but it was very weird. They weren't hurt, which is also a miracle, so it's all a little strange. We're boarded up for now, hoping we can get a new window put in for Tuesday night's opening reception. Fingers crossed for no more bearhugs.

Time for a sneak preview of Roland Tamayo's work for this Tuesday night's "Quiet Storm," a few pieces to talk about over the BBQ.

The last one is for all my bowlers out there...

These pieces are stunning in person. Roland just gets better and better every show, really finding his voice and style over the past year.

Have a great holiday!

Searching For Satori

We are getting VERY excited about Matt Dangler's new solo show! It's just around the corner and I don't want to give away too much from the show, so I have a few small detail shots for you...

The work is incredible! Matt is one artist that people always expect to be impressed by, which is a lot of pressure for him to live up to those high standards, but he always delivers beyond our expectations. You can't deny his talent.

The new show is titled "Searching For Satori" and Dangler explains, "In Zen Buddhism 'Satori' is a spiritual awakening that often comes suddenly. With hopes of reaching and sharing 'Satori' - I infuse my own spirituality within my paintings. 'Searching For Satori’ seemed an adequate title, considering that’s what painting is for me, and what I believe should be the viewers motivation as well."

Matt put a lot of thought into this show, as well as hours upon hours of hard work. This is definitely not one to miss! "Searching For Satori" opens one week from today on May 29th at our San Francisco location. Don't miss it!

Well Done!

Los Angeles artist, Casey Weldon is our next featured artist at www.88point5.com!

Casey has created a new series, all acrylic on watercolor paper with lovely rounded-corners. At $250.00 each, these are a steal because they are beautiful paintings AND they're framed! Since the show doesn't officially open until this Saturday, you'll have to settle for a couple preview pics for now...

You can see the entire show this Saturday, May 23rd at www.88point5.com!

It's May

New print announcement for ya!

Our first giclee print with Florida artist Dan May is called "The Moment Before Waking," and it's one of the most stunning prints we've published to date. It's a 12 x 16 inch giclee print on archival paper from a hand-signed and numbered edition of only 50. I also think these prints are a bargain at $75 - especially when you see them in person. They will first be available this Thursday, May 21, at 11 AM PST at G1988: LA. You can email us at gallery1988@aol.com or call us at (323) 937 - 7088 to pick one up.

You should definately pick one of these up.

I hear it

Our next show at G1988: LA is a little over a week away and the work that's pouring in (that'll be a pun later, keep it in mind) is awe-inspiring. The show is called "Quiet Storm" and it features artwork from 4 artists, Roland Tamayo (LA), Krista Huot (Canada), Scott Campbell (NY) and ghostpatrol (Australia). This is one of those small group shows where each artist has a similar theme employed in each of their works, a sort of petite touch of quaint and emotion, but the similarity is extremely hard to put into words. It's a beautiful Saturday here in LA, so why not give you a small peek at 2 pieces from the show?

ghostpatrol

Krista Huot

Can't wait to see more from this show, and I hope to bring you previews from Scott and Roland next week as well.

Until then, watch the skies.

In Da Bizness

Well, here's a sentence I thought I'd never write: "So earlier this week, I was invited to speak to a classroom of graduating MBA students at UC Irvine on the business history of Gallery1988." Not kidding.

The subject was "Mobilizing Around Art & Music" and since I never took one Business class at USC (and have never in my life created an actual PowerPoint presentation), I felt a bit intimidated when I was first invited. But in the end, the experience was actually awesome. I focused on the early days of the gallery, the transition from having zero people on our mailing list to eventually opening a second gallery and now finding a level of success that, honestly, Katie and I didn't expect to have within 5 years. We also spent a lot of time on our past, and future (if the students are reading this...remember, you promised to keep it quiet!), work with Mattel, Disney and other large companies finding inspiration within our artists and shows. Since the class, dubbed "Edge," has a strong emphasis on living in a 2.0 world, we also dissected the online presence of the Gallery and how its been vital to our existence. Most of the "business" aspects to the gallery are something neither Katie and I ever discuss outside of each other, so it felt a bit strange - but the class asked questions throughout the presentation and we ended up going for an hour and a half. Good times, and I hope more opportunities like this one pop up in the future. One student thanked me at the end of the class by saying with a huge smile, "It was great to have someone come in here and basically tell us that everything we've learned in business school quite possibly COULD be bullshit." Here are some pics...

This is now the closest I had ever come to Business School.

Been a while since I had been on a college campus and forgot how much inspiration it can bring.

Here's the class. I look stressed because I'm probably talking about the idea that our first two years were filled with exhibitions from great artists (i.e. Audrey on the screen), but we still weren't all that well known outside of a 3 mile radius.

Your guest professor has played Guitar Hero more than I've worn a suit. Real talk. Picture to prove it.

Starting to wrap up, the screen proclaims my newest victory, and yes I did wear a Miller Genuine Draft tee to teach a class of Business Grad students.

Thanks to all the students from Edge, as well as David Obstfeld (who extended the invite) and John Seely Brown (who's history at Xerox involved the creation of the computer mouse! He was nice enough not to throw his lunch at me as I said "bullshit" more than 5 times). To be honest, it's also a big deal for me to be invited to something like this, since I join a group of guest speakers that includes members of Obama's staff and the CIO of Starbucks this year. Thanks again, UCI.

One For You, One For Me

Love random finds. Was just checking out the trailer for the new Steven Soderbergh movie, "The Girlfriend Experience," a mainstream (but indie) movie starring XXX's biggest star Sasha Grey (in a what seems to be her R-Rated debut), when I noticed the "2 Girls" print from Audrey Kawasaki that we sold exclusively here at G1988: LA back in 2006. I'm under the impression it's the first print ever produced with Audrey. Could be wrong. Either way, cool to see it in a movie.

For those now buying this print on eBay, remember at one time it cost $125 here, and it didn't sell out for about a month. Good to get in at the beginning.

You can see the entire trailer by CLICKING HERE.

There's no place like Matt's Dangler's imagination

Matt Dangler just sent me some images of his new work and I seriously want to take a vacation in one of the paintings. It's stunning and I can't wait to see it in person. I feel peaceful just looking at it on my computer screen.

(click the image to enlarge)

And here's a close-up, detail of another new piece, where you can see the brushstrokes and amazing texture that Matt's known for.

(click the image to enlarge)

The show opens Friday, May 29th at G1988 San Francisco. Matt will be in SF for the show, his first time seeing the SF gallery! AND he'll be exhibiting his largest painting to date, a massive 48 x 36 inch absolutely breathtaking piece that will blow you away.

This is definitely not a show to miss! Taking a quote from a recent email Matt sent me, he says "I'm very excited... this is the best group of paintings I've put together as I had hoped for." Stay tuned for more sneak peeks!

With The Students

I jetted out to Chicago this weekend for work (more on that down the road), but before I took off, my girlfriend Chrissy and I were lucky enough to see the OTIS Illustration Senior Graduation show on Thursday night. For the past two years, I've been working with OTIS Illustration instructors Nathan Ota and Bob Dob, creating a project every year for their junior class that coincides with Crazy 4 Cult, and finds a few students every year participating in their first art show. This year's seniors include many of the artists you already find hanging on G1988's walls, as well as some new names - and I must say the atmosphere and experience that Bob and Nathan are creating at OTIS is both exciting and integral, focusing on both the world of illustration and the gallery scene for young artists. I remember when we first opened the gallery, everyone seemed to be talking about the Clayton Brothers' positive influence at Art Center and the artists graduating, but I can't help but think that torch has been passed since Bob and Nathan are helping create careers while the artists are STILL IN SCHOOL. Anyway, took some pictures of the show and wanted to share...

First up, Julian Callos. A super-familiar face to G1988, Julian is my favorite up-and-coming artist. I can say that easily. The pieces he created for his senior thesis were breath-taking. I absolutely loved them and was thrilled to find out that the pieces are all going to be featured in an upcoming show at G1988: SF. Didn't know that. Consider this a sneak peek - and even more proof that Julian is one to watch...

Julian also showed off some of his 3-D talents and created this sculpture to accompany the paintings...

Allison Reimold is probably the most improved artist in the class, when you compare the first time I
saw her work during her junior year Crazy 4 Cult project and what I saw at the Senior show
(as well as her recent Idiot Box piece). I can not wait to see more from her,
and she's got some shows at G1988, so I'll see it first-hand.

Jaw Cooper, who was in last year's Crazy 4 Cult, has also developed into a seriously incredible artist.

A new name to me, Chan Koak, had some adorable pieces on display.
An artist I will be emailing for sure.

I know we've posted about it on here before, but it's worth 2 postings.
Here's Mylan Nguyen's entire senior installation creating a pretty sweet little houseboat.
Although we missed them by about an hour, I hear Greg Simkins and his son Isaac
had a bit of sailing adventure in it.

And most of the pieces featured in the boat were actually all available on our website, 88point5.
You can see those by CLICKING HERE.

Thomas Lynch III has been featured at G1988 a few times already,
and excited to see more of his work now that he's graduated.

And on my way out I was totally impressed by Graphic Design grad
Kaoru Amy Shimsohige's posters about gender inequality.
This poster detailed her skills at Mario Kart (as Bowser) and how after winning
races on her DS Wi-Fi in high school, boys would find out she was a girl and
immediately have negative things to say. She on the other hand would
laugh and race again.
Good stuff.

Again, LOVED going to this show and it really was a fun experience.
And with a few juniors joining this year's Crazy 4 Cult show in July already,
next year's Seniors are gonna be just as impressive.
