I'm in Hawaii right now, bout to celebrate the New Year - which you would think would keep me off the blog, but seeing that new Nathan Ota piece Katie posted, made me jealous. So here's some new peeks at pieces from the upcoming Stan Lee Tribute at G1988: LA on Jan. 9th:
Luke Chueh
Joshua Clay
And with that...Happy New Year and ALOHA!

My job is way cooler than yours. Does your job have dudes dressed in Santa outfits outside, also wearing Alien and Predator masks to publicize their movie coming out on X-Mas? Oh, it does? SHIT! Well, so does mine.
Kids seem a little scared.
...Gallery Assistant Becky is not scared.
Really, just another day though truthfully.

My best friend from high school, Ms. Laura Lee Mattingly, just moved back to San Francisco from NYC! She is a very special lady, so you if live in SF and see her on the street you must say hello!
We had a party for her last night and Nathan Stapley, Scott Campbell and Isaac Pierro all came to welcome her home. Thanks for coming guys!

On The 4th Day Before Christmas, G1988: LA Gave To Me...
Being half Catholic has gotten me into the spirit of giving, and since I just found out most people have off today here in LA (and by most I mean, not me), let's do an IN STORE ONLY sale of Luke Chueh's new print. Again, this is only for people who walk into the LA gallery between today and the 23rd. This print will actually go on sale in the middle of January. But, yes, if you walk into today, you can take home the print. This print is not eligible with any of our holiday sales.
Luke Chueh
Rocket
16 x 20 inches
giclee print on archival paper
hand signed and numbered edition of 50
$150.00
And coming here to the gallery isn't a gross thing or anything. I mean, we even sponsor cool events next door, like the other night's Evening With MF Grimm (and assorted comic book pros). The event was awesome and had an overwhelming turnout, all helping raise funds for the CBLDF (Comic Book Legal Defense Fund). Quick pic re-cap of things that excited me:
The line for autographs from the bald Brian K. Vaughn, who is one of my favorite comic book writers and a guy who I'm sure will start cashing in on Hollywood in a Jeph Loeb way. He writes Y - The Last Man, The Runaways, Ex Machina and basically all the comics you should read. I don't read a ton of comics, but I do know these are the new ones to pick up.
And here's our boy, Percy "MF Grimm." Very nice guy, who seemed pretty geeked out by being surrounded by some his fav writers too.
He actually made a pretty big deal out of me making sure I got a pic of him and Brian and emailed it to him later. Always a nice thing to see.
Thanks to everyone who came out and raised funds for a good cause. Until then, come on by, I'll break street date on these Luke prints. BUT NO, no shipping or rserving these prints. I'm enforcing today.

Holiday Season = gift ideas, events and Trader Joe's Jo-Jo cookies (if you don't know, you should).
First up, we have some new Internet Exclusives on our website from a BRAND NEW International artist, Rude. A French tattoo artist, Rude recently made a trip out to LA and dropped off some of his incredible work, which is now available for purchase. The work is UNREAL in person, totally stunning, and at GREAT prices. These would make a perfect gift.

I think it goes without saying, these are pretty amazing.
And this Wednesday, December 19th from 6-9 PM, our neighbors are having an amazing event, that we are one of the sponsors of. It's the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Holiday Party, which brings the likes of some serious comic book masters including Y-The Last Man and Ex Machina's Brian K. Vaughn, Bill Simpsons of "The Simpsons Comic" and Manhunter's Marc Andreyko. But the aspect we're involved in revolves around one man named, Percy Carey, known to some as M.F. Grimm.
Underground rap legend M.F. Grimm has one of those music industry stories that is so mind boggling - it just doesn't make sense (I can relate). Recently chronicled in the amazing Vertigo comics graphic novel "Sentences," Grimm, a New York veteran of the rap game since 1993, now makes his way around stages in a wheelchair after a 1994 muder attempt (the second on his life). He's released tons of music, has worked with MF Doom and Kool G Rap and actually made a full album in 2000 during the 24 hours he was released on bond from a life sentence he was given for narcotics and consipiracy charges (he was released in 2003 after he found his OWN LEGAL LOOPHOLE while studying in jail!). He grew up next door to Morgan Freeman, was a child actor on Sesame Street, is rumored to have written a majority of the lyrics on Dr. Dre's "Chronic," and just recently followed up a great 3-disc anthology set of his works with a new CD, The Hunt For The Gingerbread Man. I mean, this dude is so interesting. He's considered one of rap's unsung heroes and most likely the most entertaining Scorsese-like story the genre has ever seen.
And he will be at the event, promoting the "Sentences" graphic novel, which I 100% endorse and reccomend. It will get you all caught up on his ridiculous life tale. And for a small donation to the Legal Fund, you'll get him to sign this...
A limited edition print we're co-opting with Golden Apple (25 made), featuring an MF Grimm image from the comic. He will hand sign them for you and hopefully talk about his life a bit.
Here at 1988 we don't endorse many events outside of our own. We've been approached to promote nightclubs, involve ourselves in awful clothing line one-night art events and basically endorse anything on wheels. And we don't. But trust me when I say learning more about the life of MF Grimm, and actually getting to meet him in a rare LA appearance, is pretty awesome - rap fan or not.

The Hazards of Owning A Gallery
First of all, I want to send my condolences to the Harold Golden gallery in Florida, and all the artists who lost work, in the weird freak balloon fire. I've heard accounts and seen news stories that kinda resemble the Hindenburg...
Must have been a bit on the horrfic side. We hear they're going to rebuild slowly, but it's never a good thing to hear about.
In related news, I got stuck in a box today.
I was pushing a painting into a box.
And got stuck. Then freaked a little, a la Frankenstein.
Then I pulled myself out with power.
It's a tough racket this gallery ownership.

Danger
It just gets better and better. Another sneak peek. This time at Daniel Danger's upcoming 7 color art print, which here has been turned into a digital postcard to promo the show. But once the opening hits, you'll be able to pick one up from a limited edition (minus all the info and logo at the bottom). His take on Dr. Strange's house is incredible and stunning. This is shaping up to be best delivered group show in 88 history.
Also, did you check your inbox?

Oh, That's Cool
Hello, friends.
As everyone returns from Miami and the Art Basel shindig (I didn't actually go, but I did wear white pants and casual loafers around the house while chatting about Jai Alai this weekend, so I was there in spirit), we're in full swing here at 1988 for the Holiday season. For those on our mailing list who are thinking about buying something, but just think everything over $50 is 10% too expensive - look out for our first annual Holiday Gift Guide (and coupon surprise) in your inbox tomorrow morning! Which means, this is your last chance, if you're not on our email list, send me an note at gallery1988@aol.com and I'll make sure to add you before the blast tomorrow.
Welcome Kim. She's a seasonal intern over here at 1988 and she's in charge of shipping your Stella Fight Club prints. So, you know not to make her mad.
Gallery 1988 friend and resident street credibility professor Murs recently dropped his new mixtape, 'Murs and the Misadventures of the Nova Express," and low and behold - look who got the cover. It's 1988 boy genius Matt Dangler and his Loompa Land image from Crazy 4 Cult, which is still available as a print at Crazy4Cult.com. Yes, we got to curate the cover of the CD and yes, it's totally fresh. We have some here in the gallery, if you want to buy dope hip-hop and ignore the crap they play on Power 106 now. They also have them at Amoeba and other places you'd expect to get rap mixtapes rather than an art gallery. Here's his new music video too!
The reason I bring up the man named Murs is also because I ran into him this weekend at the ArcLight after catching the opening weekend of Juno. He was seeing Golden Compass (Take that, rap world!)
Anyway, Juno is a lock for a bunch of Oscar noms this season and it was really a great little movie that is leaps and bounds better than Little Miss Sunshine, which I promise everyone will sadly compare it to, so it doesn't really need the support of our little readership. Incredible cast, great touching screenplay and ridiculously funny.
It's also cool to see David Choe, Kozyndan and Tara McPherson get some art love in the kids' rooms. As well as Jurassic 5 DJ Cut Chemist have a very odd school teacher cameo. Go support this movie, as it really is that good.
And lastly, I planned one waiting a while for stuff like this, but I can't. The art is too good. Here are two sneak peeks at pieces from our "Under The Influence" A Tribute to Stan Lee" show opening Jan. 8! It really just gets better and better.
Amanda Visell x The X-Men
Chris Tezber x Spider-Man
Travis Lampe x Iron Man
WOW.

Our Trade Paperback
The Holiday season is always a bright one here at 1988, and this year is no exception. Those on our gallery email list will get a nice little surprise at the beginning of next week in their inbox. So if you aren't on the mailer, send over an email to gallery1988@aol.com and ask to jump aboard. Worth it.
Why not make some sort of announcement today though?
As you might know Gallery 1988 and Golden Apple Comics will present "Under The Influence: A Tribute To Stan Lee," an epic art show where almost 100 artists will pay homage to comic book legend Stan Lee by painting his creations and tales in their own styles. We did something similar for Walt Disney in 2006, and it's still considered one of our best. But back then we couldn't get Walt Disney, or even his preserved brain in a jar. This time, we got Stan "The Man" Lee to actually endorse the show, and attend the opening reception on Jan. 8, 2008 from 7-11 PM! So as our first real Stan Lee Tribute posting, let's unveil the insane artist line-up...

Face It!
Man, I really love this Ahren show. We had the opening last night, and I do wish more would people would see this work in person, but we had a great time. But we have the whole month of December to check it out, so don't miss it! All the available work is now viewable at our website, www.gallery1988.com, in the LA side - check it.
To celebrate the opening, Gallery Assistant to the Stars Becky and I dressed as if we were characters in an Ahren Hertel painting.
Oh, the fun we find in small details.
Did you see these? I'm pushing them as an amazing Holiday gift. These are lithographs from Ahren, limited and hand signed to 25. Each one is also hand painted with oils by Ahren's hand, hence, the colors. They're $125 and an awesome gift. Give the gift of art...or Itunes cards. It's up to you.
And since most of our phone calls are about these five things, here are the answers:
1. Yes, we do still have some Stella Im Hultberg "Marla" prints available.
2. Yes, we do still have Luke Chueh "Bat Bear" prints available.
3. No, we are totally sold out of Luke Chueh's "Jacked."
4. There is a very limited amount of Greg Simkins's "Winter's Knight" for purchase by calling the SF gallery at (415) 409 - 1376.
5. Yes, we do still have a few Nathan Ota "Candy Colored Clown" prints.
Rapper Pimp C died yesterday, which is a bummer for me, being a long time UGK fan, and with their "Player's Anthem" song being only one of five rap songs I currently like on Sirius. Met him once in person in total passing, so it's nothing more than just a fan sending out an R.I.P. and hoping he's not only remembered as the other guy on Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'."
Also, let the Gallery 1988/Golden Apple Comics "Under The Influence: A Tribute To Stan Lee" art show publicity train begin! To remind you, it's the next show at G1988: LA and it has almost 100 artists paying tribute to comic book legend Stan Lee, by reinterpreting his classic icons and stories. Pretty soon we'll start rolling out the artist line-up and some pics for you to freak about. It's early, as the show doesn't actually open until Jan. 8, 2008 - but from the sneak peeks I do possess, this is going to be one for the ages.
Also, there is a new Luke Chueh print coming before the holidays after all. More on that most likely tomorrow.
