Craola Installation - DAY THREE - Live Blogging

Day Three brings creativity galore. Greg is putting together a window display (hence those bags I was confused about) and it's really dope (is "dope" still cool to say? Actually, is "cool" still cool to say?). This show is AMAZING and I really can't say enough about Greg's new work. Absolutely breathtaking and setting a standard for artists in his peer group (now I know I'm not cool, I said "peer group.") Here are some pics...





Worst part of owning a gallery? Window stickers. I really seem to be the worst at it, but with Greg's help - all is easier.

Emily from StrangeCo stopped in and held Greg's baby, Isaac. YES, he's spitting up as I took the picture. But you probably didn't notice that, because you're looking at those ink pieces, huh?

Craola Installation - DAY TWO - Live Blogging

Today involved a lot of manual labor, which didn't make for great pictures. Sorry. But as Greg was leaving he left all this behind:



I know you can't see much, but trust me when I say it's a whole lot of different "stuff." It's purpose? Your guess is as good as mine. And mine is....he's going to eat it all during the opening as a live art installation. I don't know. I could be wrong.

THE ULTIMATE GALLERY1988 SHOWDOWN

On the left we have Benjamin the Bugg, the golden boy and hometown hero weighing in at 14lbs, 6 oz. And on the right we have Finn the Min Pin, weighing in at 15lbs, 4 oz. He’s the OG G1988 mascot, returning to his roots all the way from rainy San Francisco, CA.

These two featherweights will face off for the FIRST TIME EVER, live this Friday at Gallery1988 Los Angeles! But who will be victorious? Will Finn’s wisdom and speedy foot work pay off? Or will Benjamin win first place with his distracting good looks and puppy charm?

Unfortunately, this showdown will not be open to the public, as it’s going to take place during Greg Simkins’ top secret installation Friday afternoon. But I promise to document the battle as I’ll be there to witness it myself because I’M COMING TO LA TOMORROW!!!

I am so excited to be back in LA.

News from the North...

Here's a pic from the Apres Garde show which opened on Saturday night in SF...

I want to thank Anthony Ausgang for putting together an amazing show! And I also want to thank all the artists who came from out of town to be there, including Howard Hallis, Dame Darcy, Jason Maloney, Sonik Mercury, Stephen Holman and Treiops Treyfid. I was great to have so many people come and support the show. We also had an unexpected visit from Buff Monster, who came all the way from LA!

Scott Campbell also stopped by...



Although he's not in the Apres Garde show, he is in our next show. Yep, that's right, PAPER PUSHERS is back and this year it's in SF! The show is all works on paper and there are a ton of amazing artists involved this year! It's a great opportunity to find some affordable pieces by your favorite artists. (SHOW FLYER)

Eat at Bucco's

If I had a penny for everytime someone asked me if we even planned on showing photos in our gallery, let's just say the Antony Micallef show would have seemed fairly priced. It's weird too because we did have a photo show when we first opened (a.k.a. when you didn't know we existed), and it just didn't seem to do that well. We've always wanted to try again and when we first saw Katherine Narducci's "My New York" photos, we could think of no better chance.



Not a picture from the show, that's a picture of Katherine I stole from an HBO website.

You may know Katherine as a regular on a small HBO upstart called "The Sopranos," where she played Artie Bucco's wife, Charmaine, for 8 seasons. That show did ok. She also was a lead in "Bronx Tale" and the painfully underrated "2 Family Home." So in short, she's worked with Deniro and David Chase, so who better to document New York than this East Harlem native. During her down time from filming "The Sopranos" she went around her favorite city and took pictures of sights she slowly sees disappearing as the years go by. The sense that New York is a living, breathing entity, as well as the creativity it inspires decreases with every Duane Reade and Circuit City that finds itself on a corner. The Mom and Pop butchers, the gay pride parades and the dog washing stores with names like "Shampoozled" are few and far between, unless you get to see Katherine's 3-day photo event, "My New York" here at Gallery 1988: LA. It opens October 4th with an opening reception (with the artist and some other recognizeable face in attendance) from 7-10 PM, and it will run until Sunday at 6. I haven't asked her about the urban legend that it was her voice as Tony's wife in alternate universe when he almost died, I'll leave that to you, mooch.

THE AUSGANG GANG

A very special guest and highly regarded artist has curated our next SF show... ANTHONY AUSGANG!!!

Jensen and I are always excited to have Anthony's work in the gallery. We love him and his work and we knew he could put together an amazing show, which he definitely did!

The show is called "Apres Garde" and opens one week from tomorrow (Oct. 6th).

That's one of the three pieces Anthony will have in the show, "The Death Of Sylvester." I seriously LOVE that painting!

Yup, Real World Alumni. I'm a super fan. I've been geeked out since Season 1 and still actually try to catch all the episodes I can. The fact that MTV runs them every 2 hours helps.

WELL, my little dreams have come true. I can't reveal too much, but the Real World is back in Hollywood and Gallery 1988 has curated some art for the new house! Be on the lookout for PlasticGod, Chris Lee (The Crazy 4 Cult poster!), Ahren Hertel, Peter Gronquist, Kii Arens and MORE, when the new season debuts in a few months. I wanted someone to do a commission piece of Puck snorting booger rocks for their living room, but that might have been a bit too self referential. Big things for us, right?

ALSO, don't forget! No complaining to me this time. I'm giving you fair warning. The newest Crazy 4 Cult print goes on sale Friday at Noon! You can call either the LA gallery (323) 937 - 7088 or the SF gallery (415) 409 - 1376, starting at noon PST. THEY ARE ONLY 20! Lowest print run we've ever done at G1988! They really do look stunning and they shouldn't last very long at all, if you look at all our past releases.
