At SF Sketchfest this past weekend, we were lucky enough to be included in the "Wet Hot American Summer Live Radio Play" at the Marine's Memorial Theater in San Francisco. We were there, before and after the event, selling prints from our recent Wet Hot themed show "Camp Firewood." We also released 4 new prints, which are now available on our website! After successful comedic partnerships with Comedy Central and FunnyOrDie, G1988 will take the show on the road, to San Francisco, for "Wet Hot American Summer: The Live Radio Play." Taking place January 21, 2012 at the sold out Marines' Memorial Theater, G1988's participation will continue the success from "Camp Firewood," the recent 10-year anniversary tribute art show we held at our Venice location for the cult classic, "Wet Hot American Summer." For the live radio play on the 21st, which will be adapted for the stage by Thrilling Adventure Hour's Acker & Blacker, will feature Michael Ian Black, Chris Meloni, Joe Lo Truglio, Amy Poehler, David Wain, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Marguerite Moreau and Ken Marino on stage performing the movie as never seen before!
Gallery1988 will be set up in the lobby, before and after the show, selling some of the most popular posters from our recent "Camp Firewood," and releasing 4 new prints made especially for, and released first at, SF Sketchfest.
This one might seem familiar, as it's a brand new color variant of the "Wait For Me, Abby Bernstein" print from artist Justin Santora that sold out almost immediately during the Wet Hot tribute show. We'll have these in limited quantity first at Sketchfest Radio Play event, then whatever is left over will be sold on our website, gallery1988.com.
With the help of artist Brandon Rike, Gallery1988 created these iconic prints of Andy, Coop and Gene from the movie, each limited to only 50 each! These are awesome and seem like perfect prints to get signed that night. Whatever is left over from the event, will again be available on our website after the 21st.

A recent Entertainment Weekly had a huge spread on Wet Hot American Summer, and guess who got a nice little quote from Joe Lo Truglio? We did!! A lot of buzz came from this article because it mentions the possibility of a prequel to the movie. Although it's a long shot, if a prequel ever happens we will absolutely do another Wet Hot art show! (Fingers crossed).
We were so stoked to have Marguerite Moreau, a.k.a. "Katie," stop by the Wet Hot American Summer anniversary show today at G1988: Venice. The fact that we are having our dream show for our favorite movie and all the stars of it are stopping by, emailing us or buying pieces is mind blowing!
We are so excited to be ushering in "Little Cloud Show" featuring over 20 new pieces from Arkansas native Ben Strawn. Strawn has been a favorite in past G1988 group shows like "Crazy 4 Cult," "The LOST Art Show" and "Vivsect Playset," and now we're happy to bring a more focused show to our walls. The show opens Thursday night, June 16th, and showcases Strawn's signature style, which involves his technique of creating lightboxes for every piece. Seeing his work on the Internet just isn't enough, and anyone who has seen his art in person would agree. Ben, and his family, made the long drive to Los Angeles, so they will be joining us for the reception!

Also - Ariel just told me that a lovely older lady, about the age of 80, came in to the gallery this morning and pointed out that Dave MacDowell's "Dick Cream" painting was her fav from the show. Classic.
Last night's Wet Hot American Summer 10th Anniversary Tribute Show was a DREAM COME TRUE. When we opened the gallery 7 years ago, Katie and I joked, that if we were still open in 2011 we'd have to have a show dedicated to our favorite movie, and we did! And to have David Wain, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Peter Salett and producers of the movie, in the house, and to have actors who have BECOME MAJOR STARS SINCE THAT MOVIE, purchase pieces from other states? I MEAN, that happened.

With only a dozen of the "Don't Worry" print available in the entire Olly Moss show (get one of the last ones by CLICKING HERE), we don't have a whole lot to do except get excited, and ready, for our upcoming shows. The end of May/beginning of June is going to be a VERY busy time at both locations, and it's time to make the announcements.
First up, we're proud to announce "Baggage & Freedom," a solo exhibit from D. Ross, better known as "Scribe." We've been excited about this one for quite some time, and you can see more of his work at his website by CLICKING HERE. He's well known for his paintings, custom toys and sculptures, and has become one of the most sought after vinyl toy artists in the past few years. Scribe will be in Los Angeles for the reception and doing some pretty cool limited time installations in the gallery, so make sure you come to the opening on Thursday, May 26th from 7-10 PM at G1988: Melrose.
And next, with our friends at Treehouse Brand Stores, we follow the lead of the E3 convention that will be in town, and celebrate American McGee's Alice video game series, a groundbreaking group of video games that puts art in the forefront of your console. With the release of his newest game, American McGee's Alice: Madness Returns, we'll be celebrating at G1988: Melrose with an art show and party you won't want to miss. We're especially stoked to have American on hand for this! You can learn more about the game by CLICKING HERE.
With artwork, inspired by the video game series, from G1988 regulars like NC Winters, Chet Zar, Ruel Pascual and Luke Chueh, G1988 newcomers like Alex CF, Cate Rangel and Adam S. Doyle. In addition to that work, we'll have VERY limited edition screenprints inspired by the game from Rhys Cooper, Kevin Tong, Ken Taylor, James Flames, Phantom City Creative and Angryblue. Also, making his G1988 debut, clothing designer Dr. Romanelli will unveil his creation for the game and American McGee, which I can't wait to see. AND if that wasn't enough, we'll have artwork actual Alice game designers, which will include sketches and notes from the game's creation, girls in Alice costumes serving drinks and celebrity DJs. There's a special E3 private reception on Wednesday, June 8th and a public reception on June 9th, both from 7-10 PM. You'll hang out at this one if you know what's good for you.

Gallery1988: Venice will open "Camp Firewood: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Wet Hot American Summer," with 60 artists paying tribute to the classic cult comedy. If you've never seen Wet Hot American Summer, you are seriously missing out. Since it's release in 2001, it's paicked up quite an audience, and the stars of the movie have picked up some extremely successful careers (Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Jimmy Fallon head writer AD Miles, Amy Poehler, Joe Lo Truglio, Judah Friedlander). Created by the brains behind the MTV sketch show "The State," this movie is an absurd spoof of the 1980's sleepover camp (Meatballs-esque) comedy. You can check out the trailer by CLICKING HERE. And we're insanely privileged to have the movie's director and co-writer, David Wain, to host the art show! DREAMS DO COME TRUE. AND, we'll be producing a screening, along with the Q&A podcast with Jeff Goldsmith, but we'll have more details on that later. If you haven't seen the movie, it was currently added to Netflix streaming, so you have no excise now. (p.s. it's NSFW).
