Kurt Halsey Opens TOMORROW NIGHT!

Don't miss Kurt Halsey's very last show, which opens tomorrow night at Gallery1988 Venice! The show looks amazing, and you definitely want to check out Kurt's new work before it's gone forever. (We were expecting Kurt to attend the opening reception, but unfortunately he will not be able to travel from Portland to make the event).

Opening TOMORROW NIGHT, Friday, February 3rd from 7-10pm

Gallery1988 Venice

Last Chance Kurt Halsey

Our next Venice show is epic. It's a solo show with all-time fan favorite artist, Kurt Halsey. But this show is even more special because it's Kurt's last solo show - ever. That's right, this will be Kurt's LAST show. SO, if you love Kurt's work, like we do, you must come to this show! Don't miss you last chance to own one of Kurt's beautiful pieces.

The show opens Friday, February 3rd from 7-10pm at Gallery1988 Venice. Stay tuned on the blog for sneak peeks!

Benched

Thanks to everyone who came out last night for the Kurt Halsey Frederiksen opening, as it was packed to the gills, in usual Kurt fashion. I don't think we stopped selling for even a second from 7 til the close at 10. And major props to Sir Frederiksen for signing prints, cards and pieces for what seemed like a never ending line (proving the MLB All Star game only meant something to me and Dan Uggla's bookie). Kurt really is such a nice guy, and a serious pleasure to work with. Here's hoping he pulls a Brett Favre and comes back to 1988 soon!

Click here to see all of Kurt Halsey's artwork from this month's show.

On a totally different note...

I noticed this park bench was set up directly across from the gallery today:

...and now a few people have commented on it. It seriously looks JUST like our logo. I think it's for a cell phone or something, but it actually is facing our logo, placed on the top of our building, which to remind you is this:

Weird, right? And to be right in front of our gallery? Thoughts anyone?

Tomorrow we'll announce our other festivities at Comic Con, to add onto that sweet Woebots release on Saturday...

The Master Plan

A busy week outside of the gallery had my blog updates down to a minimum, but my stress levels at a high. Which makes it a good thing that our next opening in Los Angeles, which is Tuesday from 7-10 PM, is for Kurt Halsey Frederiksen, a stress free dude always ready to have fun with his solo shows (this is his second at 1988: LA). My favorite thing about Kurt is that he thinks out of the box. With his extremely loyal fan base (last year I called them rabid and felt the sting of his Live Journal Fandom page, so this year I pick my words with care), he's always looking to change what's expected and take it to the next level. Which is why I smiled when I got this in inbox:

Hand drawn installation game plan drawn up by Kurt like he's the Bill Belichick of underground art. Can't wait to start this today.

And here's a sneak peek at one of the records Kurt did for the show, and this looks really cool...

Come say hi at the opening on Tuesday night, as Kurt will be in attendance as well, displaying his new artwork - which includes custom park signs, fireflies, sewer shelves, leaves, custom alarm clocks, felt cats, drawings, paintings, prints and records. All the stuff you were expecting.

My Lights And Action Were Messed Up

I've had some issues with my camera lately, so please excuse the photo heavy update today, but I gotta get you back in the groove here.

First up, we had the 2-day Kurt Halsey Frederiksen Meet & Greet last week, and it went really well. I know I called the Kurt fans "the word I must not speak again" once, but now I can call them "friendly." They really are the kindest art buyers around. Which works out, cause Kurt is a nice dude himself. My favorite fact about Kurt I realized this last week: He may depict some sensitive, girl oriented, emotional artwork - but dude is a SERIOUS football fan. Listening to him talk about vintage Cunningham (not THAT Philly Young Gun vintage Randall, but the Purple Monster Minnesota version) might be one of my favorite "I own an art gallery" moments. Anyway, so the events were fun and lots of Kurt fans (some even travelling from Texas) were ecstatic to meet him. Witness the strength of street knowledge:

And trust me when I say, I can not forget the newest member of the Gallery 1988: LA family.

I got a dog. Yes, his name is Benjamin and he is a 4 month old Bugg (hybrid of a Boston Terrier and Pug) and he is totally freaking adorable. I know it's hard shoes to fill with Finnigan the Mini Pin moving to SF, but I think Ben (or Benny, but NOT Benjy) could do it. I dare you to not to smile. At least at this picture:

No, those are ACTUAL shorts, not my boxers. But YES, I am hairier than those werewolf kids that Maury Povich used to always have on his talk show. Anyway, he's a genius and we welcome him with open arms (and a bag for picking up his stinky poo) into the 1988 clan.

Meet, Greet, Feet.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

No eye infections on the horizon, as the Kurt Halsey Frederiksen Meet & Greet is happening Friday night (June 1st) from 6-9 PM and Saturday afternoon (June 2nd) from 12-3 PM. Kurt will be in the Los Angeles gallery signing autographs, taking pictures, kissing babies, giving his take on the recent Elizabeth Hassleback comments, Kobi Bryant's behavior, tasting grape soda, etc. He also has promised some gifts for those who attend either day, as well as a sneak peek into some future projects he's working on. Should be a fun night, and what better time to buy the two remaining pieces in the show, then in front of the artist himself? Alright, that was stretch. But we'll have fun no matter what.

See you there.

Like Wolverine...

Listen, I know I came under fire for calling the fans of Kurt Halsey "rabid," and I caught my share of focused poop during the opening by the fans, but we can all agree on one thing, you Kurt fans have very fast dialing phones!

The LA opening for the Kurt Halsey Frederiksen solo show was a huge success, besides the fact that an awful eye infection grounded Mr. Halsey from attending the opening. I'd post the pics of his eye he sent me, but #1) not sure he wants anyone to see it, #2) I just ate those mochi balls on a Pinkberry, so it might make me sick.

But Kurt is a super class act and has created a Meet & Greet event for June 1st (from 6 - 9 PM) and June 2nd (from 12 - 3 PM) where he will sign and shake whatever you want (his eye bandage maybe?). Almost fully sold out of his work for the show now, half at the opening reception, half, as I hinted to earlier, to the many phone calls that poured in once the work went online this morning. I will change "rabid" to "rapid."

Katie and I would like to thank Kurt for putting together a wonderful solo show and doing it with professionalism rarely seen in this little world of art. I couldn't think of an artist more worthy of such rabi...I mean, support.

BUT, you wanna see some other die-hards?

Down the street at Munky King, the line went for over a block with fans waiting for the release of the Luke Chueh "Possessed" vinyl toy. Saw some familiar faces in line, including 1988 favorite Adam, who skipped out on a brain surgery he had to perform at a chance to pick up the black colorway. I'm just kidding. He wanted the regular colorway.

Oh, and here's Patrick, the owner of Munky King. He's happy.

With G1988 involved in Luke's next toy, I'm already starting to practice that little pose Patrick has in the picture.

I have a long way to go.

Kurt's Hurt

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Here's a little preview of Gallery1988: Los Angeles's next show, a solo from Oregon artist Kurt Halsey Frederiksen. Kurt is leading the pack in an unannounced, and just created, contest to see who has the most die-hard, rabid fans in the underground art world. He's got a little army I tell ya. He's created just a tad under 50 pieces for this show, so add prolific to the list of emos that Kurt evokes. It's going to be a GREAT show and it opens Thursday night, May 17th, from 7-10 PM. I'll be the one talking about past relationships and situations that his paintings force me to remember. All as I take your sales order.
