Nathan arrived yesterday in LA. He came all the way from NYC for his solo show that opens at G1988 Venice TOMORROW NIGHT! Here are some last min sneak peeks. The Compartmentalizing of Nathan Stapley

Nathan Stapley is back at Gallery1988 later this month with a brand new solo show! We've worked with Nathan for years in the Melrose and San Francisco locations, but this will be his first show at our Venice gallery and he's coming to town all the way from NYC, so you must come say hello. The show is called "The Same Gang: compartmentalizing pop-culture iconography" and features all new works, where Nathan brings your favorite pop-culture icons together by similar attributes. For example, in the "Dads" painting, Jack Torrance from The Shining, Darth Vader, and Homer Simpson are just a few of our all-time favorite pop-culture fathers hanging out at a backyard BBQ. And we couldn't be happier because it's such a great concept and perfect fit for G1988. Here are a few sneak previews to get you excited about the show...

Amicus Monstrum

I can't tell you how excited am I for our next show in SF, which features the work of Nathan Stapley and Scott Campbell. These two long-time gallery friends are two of my favorite people on the planet. They used to live in SF, but they both ditched me in 2008 and moved all the way to New York! BUT they're both coming into town for the opening of their new show on May 1st!! I'm happy because not only do I love their work, but they are possibly the most fun people to hang out with ever.





I guarantee you will have fun at this show, you must come!

And on another note... I wanted to point out that one of the pieces in our current show needs to find a good home. "Cow" by Christian Montenegro is my favorite of the ARK Project prints that we included in our current DGPH show. I'm going to be so bummed if "Cow" doesn't find a home! Not only is the print one of a kind, but the sales proceeds will also be donated to the World Wildlife Fund. AND it's framed! How can you resist?

PRINTS PRINTS PRINTS (from us)

One thing that this year's Crazy 4 Cult installment has over the prior years is PRINTS. We have never in our 5 year history had as many prints available as we will for this exhibit. Arguably, this might have more prints than any of our other group shows combined.

Figured today would be a good day to unveil a fraction of these prints, at least those made by G1988 printing. These are the digital giclee prints we did in-house, with our own process and on our own printers (which is how about 70% - 80% of the prints we sell here are created).

This year we bring you a super limited version, now on archival watercolor paper, without any of the bells and whistles, just the straight image. This came out beautiful.

Our first ever Battle Royale piece from another OTIS exchange member, Julian Callos, now becomes a print. I'm a HUGE fan of the movie, so maybe it was me who made sure this was made into a print, but also tons of people come into the gallery and talk about how much they loved this piece. And since, Julian has grown into one of our absolute favorite artists here at 1988, so it's nice to remember, and hang, the first time we saw him.

Basically, Nathan has created a series of small portraits for this show. He did a huge variety, including musicians, comic book characters, characters from movies, historical figures, and more. Nathan is an incredible artist and these little portraits definitely show off his talent. And you can tell he had fun with the show at the same time. The preview will hopefully we ready later today, where you can see all 85 pieces in the show!

Oh Man

So it's Wednesday and Nathan Stapley's solo show opens this Friday, and we don't have any of the work in the gallery yet. So, I'm def stressing a little. Tomorrow will be crazy installation day. I haven't seen any of the work yet, but I did get a list of titles and prices this morning and there are 85 pieces in the show. Yes, that's right, 85 pieces!!! There are two larger pieces in the show that are $800.00 each, but the remaining 83 pieces are ALL $200 OR LESS. Crazy! I'll share a few of the titles with you... 2001, Han Solo, Clockwork Orange, Death Star, Batman, Eazy E, Coltrane, and the list goes on and on and on. It sounds amazing and the suspense is killing me. I can't wait to see the work, although I am a little terrified that we have so many pieces to hang in one day.

As soon as I have some images I will share them with you, promise.

We just got back from vacation and I'm absolutely exhausted! It's tough to get back into work mode, but I'm really excited about our shows opening this week! We have Beastie Boys opening in LA on Thursday and Nathan Stapley's solo show opening on Friday in SF! Happy New Year

Happy 2009!

The SF and LA galleries close this week every year to take a small break and relax a little bit. I'm down in Jamaica right now, in the middle of nowhere and it is amazing. We just watched a small group of dolphins swim by! This place is incredible!

This is the first time I've had internet access since being here, so we really do feel out of touch from the rest of the world. I was a little nervous checking my email that something might have gone horribly wrong at home since we've been away. But everything is fine!

I'm returning home soon to get back to work and kick off our 2009 schedule! We have two great shows coming up that we're working on in SF. The first is our new www.88point5.com show featuring the super talented Tom Haubrick.



The show opens on January 5th at www.88point5.com. Jensen and I are both really excited for this one! Take a look at Tom's website in the meantime to check out his artwork... http://haubscomix.com

Then on Jan. 9th we open Nathan Stapley's solo show "Faces and Spaces."



Before I left for Jamaica, I spoke to Nathan and he plans on delivering 100 small paintings for the show! I was so excited when I heard this, the gallery is going to look awesome and there will be a ton of work in the show! It's also the first time we'll have live music in the SF gallery. Nathan's little brother is going to perform at the opening!

I hope you all have a relaxing New Year and we'll see you soon! Our 2009 show schedules for SF and LA are really impressive, so get ready!

Goodbye Nathan!

Another good friend is leaving SF this week :( Nathan Stapley is moving to New York on Thursday. I hate saying goodbye to friends so I'm really not happy about this.

There are a few people that we work with that I consider true friends outside the gallery and Nathan is definitely one of them. I have a ton of great memories hanging out with Nathan in SF and I'm going to miss him a lot.

Oh and since this is an "art blog" I should mention that he is also an amazing artist. Seiously, very very talented. Here are some "best of" pics from past shows...

MR. STAPLEY

Nathan Stapley is one of three artists in our next show "Salad Days," which opens in San Francisco this Thursday with Jesse Ledoux and Mark Bodnar. And you lucky blog readers get to see a little detail shot from one of Nathan's pieces from the new show...



Nathan is an amazingly talented artist who graduated from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. He's also a good friend of ours and we've had the pleasure of working with him for several years now. But I'm especially excited for this show because Nathan will have 20 NEW PIECES!!!

MARK, JESSE AND NATHAN ARE COMING!

It's been a while since my last post. It's been a crazy summer with a ton of travelling and I'm finally back, but exhausted. I decided to get back on the blog cause I have some exciting news for our SF readers...

MARK BODNAR, JESSE LEDOUX, and NATHAN STAPLEY are coming! Well, Nathan actually lives here, but it's still very exciting! These three G1988 favorites are in our next show, Salad Days, which opens Sept. 6th. I know the show name is a little strange, but it has such a great meaning behind it. "Salad Days" is a term coined by Shakespeare that recalls one's youth, particularly in reference to a time of innocence and idealism. So you can see the title is perfect for these three artists.

I truly love Mark's work. His paintings make me genuinely happy.
