The Master Plan

A busy week outside of the gallery had my blog updates down to a minimum, but my stress levels at a high. Which makes it a good thing that our next opening in Los Angeles, which is Tuesday from 7-10 PM, is for Kurt Halsey Frederiksen, a stress free dude always ready to have fun with his solo shows (this is his second at 1988: LA). My favorite thing about Kurt is that he thinks out of the box. With his extremely loyal fan base (last year I called them rabid and felt the sting of his Live Journal Fandom page, so this year I pick my words with care), he's always looking to change what's expected and take it to the next level. Which is why I smiled when I got this in inbox:

Hand drawn installation game plan drawn up by Kurt like he's the Bill Belichick of underground art. Can't wait to start this today.

And here's a sneak peek at one of the records Kurt did for the show, and this looks really cool...

Come say hi at the opening on Tuesday night, as Kurt will be in attendance as well, displaying his new artwork - which includes custom park signs, fireflies, sewer shelves, leaves, custom alarm clocks, felt cats, drawings, paintings, prints and records. All the stuff you were expecting.

Joe Vaux

Here is a sneak preview of one of the new Joe Vaux paintings from our "Strangely Mannered" show that opens this Friday...

This painting is titled "Clash of the Titans" and every time I look at this piece I see something I hadn't noticed before and I'm totally falling in love with it. This morning I realized that the base of the mountains is a creature! It's crazy that I never saw that before. It's so interested to think about what immediately catches your eye when you first look at a painting. And I LOVE how the roots of the tree drape down with the waterfall. There is so much detail in this painting, it's incredible.

I can't wait for you all to see the rest of this show!

And while we're getting ready for one show to open, our current show "Everyone In Together" is closing today. There are still some great pieces left...

Scott Scheidly

Today we're working on new prints with our brand new printer! This particular print will be released at Crazy 4 Cult this August. It's Scott Scheidly's "Prophecy of Frank" piece from last year's Cult show...

Scott is also going to be in our new SF show "Strangely Mannered" that opens one week from today! The show features Scott Scheidly, Brandt Peters, Joe Vaux and Travis Louie and will open Friday, July 18th from 7-10PM.

Here's a sneak peak of one of Scott's new pieces that will be in the SF show. It's such a great piece! This show is insane...

"Wrong Side of the Tracks"

More sneak peaks to come, so stay tuned.

What the hell did we just do?

We pulled the trigger and bought a new wide format printer this week. We thought this was a brilliant idea until our new baby arrived this afternoon looking like this...

Irma, Gene and I kinda looked at each other with this sad realization that this new printer was a lot more complicated than we thought it would be. But it turned out to be quite easy to assemble.

And here it is. It looks so pretty!

A big thank you to Irma, Gene and Tiger for their help putting it together. Now we have to figure out where to put it. For those of you who have seen our back room, you know that this will not be easy.

Strange Days

The 4th of July has come and gone, hope everyone had a nice weekend...

It's supposed to be close to 100 degrees in San Francisco this entire week, which is totally nutty. The San Francisco gallery turns into a sauna, so we'll be sweating it out this week while we work on a new batch of prints to be released at the Crazy 4 Cult show this August. We're making prints of a few of the favorites from last year's show, hooray!

BUT in the meantime, we have an pretty insane show opening in SF on July 18th, which is right around the corner. The four artists in this new show are definitely a few of the most talented artists we've ever worked with... Joe Vaux, Travis Louie, Scott Scheidly and Brandt Peters. I feel a little intimidated just typing their names in this post. They're not only extremely talented, but all four of these guys are also incredibly nice - the complete package!

Here are a few images from the show...

The show titled "Strangely Mannered" opens Friday, July 18th. We'll have an online preview, so please email the SF gallery if you would like to be added to the preview list... gallery1988sf@gmail.com

Best Find Ever

On my way to the post office today, I passed something that had me screaming for a camera, especially with my newly empty right hand (cell phone while driving laws started in CA yesterday). If you don't know, they're bringing back the TV show Beverly Hills, 90210 this season, with an all new cast of youngsters (chick from Nip/Tuck who poisoned and shot Julia is amongst) with some of the 90's faces that had me tuning in every week in high school. But lo and behold, down the street from the gallery....THE NEW PEACH PIT! I couldn't believe my eyes.

Yup, they're filming the new 9-0 just a street down, and Joe E. Tata's old establishment has been updated and renovated. Let's hope David Silver still has that DJ gig. Dude has get paid somehow.

Sole Admiration

I'm not much of a "sneaker head" anymore, and I know this blog is hardly a Hype Beast, but once I saw these new Kaws x Nike Air Forces I couldn't keep it off the site. I'm not a huge fan of KAWS paintings anymore to be brutally honest, which I think is purely based on the idea that the only time I see new ones, Nigo from BAPE is goofingly posing in front of it boasting about it being his 15th straight commission or a Groundhog's Day gift for Pharell. But when it comes to products, whether it's shirts, laptop cases, toys, 4 foot toys, ashtrays or bird food, the dude can't lose. He's basically the Parker Lewis of art related retail product. And these shoes mark the first time I've been excited about kicks since I called them "kicks" un-ironically.

I'm sure there's already a line outside Union, although no release information has been announced. You have better odds finding a pant suit in Tila Tequilla's closet than you would snagging these shoes. Still, I'll be keeping my eyes open for this drop.

Goodbye Nathan!

Another good friend is leaving SF this week :( Nathan Stapley is moving to New York on Thursday. I hate saying goodbye to friends so I'm really not happy about this.

There are a few people that we work with that I consider true friends outside the gallery and Nathan is definitely one of them. I have a ton of great memories hanging out with Nathan in SF and I'm going to miss him a lot.

Oh and since this is an "art blog" I should mention that he is also an amazing artist. Seiously, very very talented. Here are some "best of" pics from past shows...
