James Jean at Golden Apple Tomorrow Night!

Tomorrow night, Weds. Nov. 12, from 8 - 10 PM, Golden Apple Comics, next door to the gallery, will be having a pretty insane book signing with comic book artist/gallery star/dude who redefined Prada James Jean. A new Fables hardcover book will be released featuring all of James's breathtaking covers - and the man himself will be on hand to sign your copy! Make sure to swing by and take part in this rare occurrence of getting to meet and greet with Mr. Jean.

The Fight Club inspired print seems to be the one everyone is waiting for, including my mom and girlfriend. Besides that, all is well here at the crime scene. We had finger prints taken today, so that felt rather Steve Guttenberg in Police Academy (The Citizens on Patrol one). New glass window goes up soon, and looks like we'll join the Melrose masses with a gate set-up to detour anyone from doing what this dude did (a.k.a. smash our window, run inside, rummage through random boxes of switches in the gallery to turn off the loud noise, attempt to open the register, realize you can't, then run out as the alarm is jarring your hearing and vision).

Someone just drove by the gallery playing "Careless Whisper" really loud, at an octave I usually hear a Chamillionare or Lil' Wayne song. I want to be friends with the person in that car.

Saturday at Golden Apple Comics, next door to the gallery, they have a cocktail party signing at 5 PM with UK artist Kevin O'Neil. He's the artist and co-creator that did the INCREDIBLE "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" comic (p.s. they had NOTHING to do with the movie, thank God) with writer Alan Moore. Tomorrow, Tuesday, will actually be the release of their highly anticipated third installment to the series, "The Black Dossier." I've been waiting for this one for quite some time now. I plan on getting through it rather quick, like I did the PS3 Simpsons Game this weekend. It's been a nerdy month so far and I still haven't started the Star Wars Lego game for Wii. I'm hoping to get some pimples to match my interests.

No, You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo.

I dare you to tell me that at your job there's a place next door where they have Yo-Yo Championship After-Party BBQ's in our alley. There was a regional competition at a nearby park, and Golden Apple is where they ended up afterwards....to party. I believe it's sponsored by Duncan, the name you can trust in Yo-Yo's, mostly because it's the only name you know. Anyway, here's my visual report:

The guy in the red shirt, with the Pepsi, is Jack. Met him at Comic Con last year, and he is one of the world's top Yo-Yo masters. He also can solve a Rubiks Cube in 90 seconds. He also is a good juggler. All very lonely skills. I can relate being an only child. You can catch him on the Ozzfest this year on the second stage right in between Atreyu and the toothless guy next to you yelling about how Sabbath rocks.









Then....they had what they called a "Knife Fight." I'm still not sure at all what this means, but I do know it's a contest between two people, who hold hands (like West Side Story battle scenes), then play with their own Yo-Yo's, until their opponent can Yo-Yo no more. Here are the bloody shots I took.





Anyway, the party was really fun and calm until one of the competitors passed out from OD'ing on Peyote. OK, that didn't happen, but it was jumping. TAKE THAT TRENDY FAIRFAX! We have block parties too!!!!!!

We Have A Virus

Being the comic book nerd I am, things revolving around Batman and the film adaptations of the Dark Knight, cause a bit of a stir within my little dorky soul. I liked the first Burton Batman a lot, LOVED the second Burton one with Penguin and a quick cameo of Paul Reubens, but every incarnation since had smelled like the poop that was found near our gallery dumpster last week (take my word, that means the movies sucked). But once Chris Nolan took over, I was brought right back in where Joel Schumaker threw me out. And with a sequel looming for Nolan's Batman, I was hesitant to celebrate when Heath Ledger was named the new Joker (I still campaign for Crispin Glover, thanks). BUT this week, a website was built for "Harvey Dent" (also known as Two-Face from the comics) showing Aaron Eckhart (of "In The Company of Men" fame) depicting the villian like this:



THEN, next door to the gallery, at Golden Apple Comics, we noticed this on the front sidewalk, written in chalk...



THHHEEEENNN, when they were cleaning up Golden Apple, they ended up finding these all over the store (in comic books, in the bathroom, etc.)...



Yup, it all says "I believe in Harvey Dent," with nutso laughter depicted next to it. I smell a very well thought out viral campaign and I'm aboard. I tell ya, we are slowly becoming the dorkus hub over here on Melrose and La Brea, so don't come to the corner talking bout Winston's on Santa Monica, your agent at Endeavor or your lunch at Mazzo with Amy Heckerling. Bring your B game, we're getting nerdy.
