SF Sketchfest 2012!

We're so excited to announce that we will be at SF Sketchfest this year, participating in one of the most exciting events on the schedule! If you don't know about SF Sketchfest, the amazing annual comedy festival in the Bay Area, learn more by CLICKING HERE.

After successful comedic partnerships with Comedy Central and FunnyOrDie, G1988 will take the show on the road, to San Francisco, for "Wet Hot American Summer: The Live Radio Play." Taking place January 21, 2012 at the sold out Marines' Memorial Theater, G1988's participation will continue the success from "Camp Firewood," the recent 10-year anniversary tribute art show we held at our Venice location for the cult classic, "Wet Hot American Summer." For the live radio play on the 21st, which will be adapted for the stage by Thrilling Adventure Hour's Acker & Blacker, will feature Michael Ian Black, Chris Meloni, Joe Lo Truglio, Amy Poehler, David Wain, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Marguerite Moreau and Ken Marino on stage performing the movie as never seen before!

Gallery1988 will be set up in the lobby, before and after the show, selling some of the most popular posters from our recent "Camp Firewood," and releasing 4 new prints made especially for, and released first at, SF Sketchfest.

This one might seem familiar, as it's a brand new color variant of the "Wait For Me, Abby Bernstein" print from artist Justin Santora that sold out almost immediately during the Wet Hot tribute show. We'll have these in limited quantity first at Sketchfest Radio Play event, then whatever is left over will be sold on our website, gallery1988.com.

With the help of artist Brandon Rike, Gallery1988 created these iconic prints of Andy, Coop and Gene from the movie, each limited to only 50 each! These are awesome and seem like perfect prints to get signed that night. Whatever is left over from the event, will again be available on our website after the 21st.

If you're attending SF Sketchfest, make sure to stop by and say hello. And if you're so inclined pick up a print and fondle some sweaters.

We are steadily approaching our Adult Swim x G1988 show, which opens this Friday night, the 13th, from 7-10 PM and the work is so incredible. Two days out, let's get you some of these sneaks...

Casey Weldon summons the Tim & Eric fans, AND the cat lovers, painting this psychedelic tongue swapping that imagine hanging on ALL OF YOUR WALLS.

Jason Edmiston continues to shock me, creating flawless paintings time after time. They genuinely look like prints. This time he takes aim at everyone's favorite action figure manipulator, Robot Chicken.

Dan Lydersen is on FIRE. Carl has never looked so good, and you have to see the detail on this one in person (and actually you have to see the detail on ALL his pieces while you're at it). Luke Chueh came in the other day and made a pretty good argument as to why Dan is one of the most impressive new artists he's seen.

Graham Erwin bring a new screenprint to G1988, this one paying tribute to Space Ghost Coast To Coast. One of my favorite emerging poster artists, Graham is one to watch.

2012 will be Dave Perillo's year. Mark. My. Words. And he kicks it off with a beautiful Venture Bros. print!

We just finished hanging Robert Brandenburg's artwork and the gallery looks amazing. This is a really fun, interactive show because you'll get to see the before and after images of the work and pick out the alterations that Robert made to each piece. Some are really subtle. He not only modified a variety of paintings, but also a book, greeting card and a box of Hostess Cupcakes. It's a really creative and clever show, so we can't wait to see what you all think! We're also excited to be releasing two prints from the show! This truly feels like a great way to start off the year and we're finally almost ready to open our first show of 2012! The show opens this Saturday, Jan. 7th from 7-10pm at our Venice location. Robert will be attending the opening, all the way from Ohio, so be sure to come say hi.

Break and Brandenburg

Hope everyone out there is having an amazing holiday season, and are readying themselves for New Year's Eve. Both galleries are currently on holiday break, so they're closed. But the Venice location will be re-opening on January 7th, with "Pooh...and Other Sh*t: hijacked art from Robert Brandenburg," a solo show we've been antsy to debut.

We first saw Robert's work after his nephew stumbled into our Melrose location, ran home and convinced his uncle to submit to the gallery, because he just couldn't imagine any other gallery in the world loving his work as much as we would. You see, Robert has a pretty fun art career. He finds old paintings, photos, advertisements and prints at garage sales, estate sales and auctions and adds pop culture elements into those paintings in the smartest and funniest ways. But the most impressive part of these hijacked pieces, is that he can EXACTLY match whatever painting (OR PHOTO!) he's adding himself to. After he was the breakout star of Crazy 4 Cult 5, where he sold his Willy Wonka and Donnie Darko inspired pieces, we just couldn't wait to see what he'd come up with for a solo show to kick off 2012. I know it sounds weird, but here are some examples from the upcoming show!

The inspiration for the show title, and image from the show card, is incredible. He found this oil on canvas tiger and knew exactly what had to be done...

Now with his addition, this piece is titled "Tigger and Pooh."

Another thing I love about Robert's pieces are the stories he writes for each piece, almost explaining the thought process on his vandalism. Everyone who buys one of Robert's pieces actually gets a picture of the before piece, and his essay.

"This cheesy, party-sized landscape painting hung in my brother's basement for nearly 20 years; gathering no admiration, but lots of dust. During the recent move to another house, the unwanted oil was on its way up the stairs to the commercial dumpster parked in the driveway...when the proverbial light bulb went off over my head.  The tripods are from the 2005 remake of "War of the Worlds" movie, and Tom Cruise might have thought twice before agreeing to take the starring role; as the other worlders have returned to claim his daughter as one of their own. Ominous though they appear; there's no real suspense, as we know how the story ends. The shortsighted invaders neglected to bring along antibiotics for their conquest of Earth. If only the aliens had thought to raid the pharmacy shelves in Walgreens before vaporizing the store!"

Another one of my favorites is "Ape Watch," which shows you how he can adapt to any style.

"While the drive out to The Forbidden Zone has become more feasible over the last 20 years, one is always advised to keep an eye out for apes. Horse mounted gorilla patrols are irregular, but their treatment of human prisoners is known to be harsh. Still, most people who have made the trip agree that the unique sights are worth the risk."

ADULT SWIM x G1988 (Melrose)

Gallery1988 (Melrose) will kick off 2012 with chaos, teaming up with Adult Swim to create quite the art show.

This one has been in the works for quite some time, and the work we've seen so far is epic, so you might want to make sure you aren't still hungover on Jan. 13th. Love the Scott Listfield piece on the flyer!

Also, this is a bit of a tease on our part, but the event is so awesome we still want to talk about it.

We've produced another poster for the ongoing Film Independent @ LACMA Live Read Series w/ Jason Reitman and this is the best yet. Matt Owen has done it again, getting even more love from Entertainment Weekly this time, as Reitman has recast the classic movie "The Princess Bride," and this new generation of actors will perform a table read of the script live and in person on December 15th. The tickets sold out in about 15 seconds flat, but there will be a stand-by line that night, and this time, WE'LL BE SELLING THESE POSTERS THERE! There were only 100 made, and they are beautiful. Past live read events have included The Breakfast Club (where Jennifer Garner, Aaron Paul & James Van Der Beek took roles) and The Apartment (where Pierce Brosnan, Natalie Portman & Steve Carrel joined). Jason keeps the cast a mystery until the last minute, but he has announced Patton Oswalt (in the Vizzini/Wallace Shawn role) and G1988 homie Nick Kroll (in the Count Rugen/Christopher Guest role), so this one will not be a let down.

We will be outside the auditorium before and after the read, so even if you don't have tickets, you can purchase a poster if you like.

Tomorrow night is the opening of the Daniel Danger curated group show, "Devil Town," and figured we'd give you guys another quick look at some of the pieces!

Dan Black created a few pieces for the show, so it was difficult to pick just one. But this one really plays into the show's theme and might just be my favorite. "Wagon Wheel" might just sound like my favorite pizza place btw.

Like explained in an earlier blog post, Daniel and I used the TV show Friday Night Lights as starting point to fine tune the show's theme and idea. A few artists knew about this point of reference, but Dan Lydersen took it literal, and I'm obsessed with this piece. Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can't lose.

G1988 fav Scott Belcastro delivered this awesome painting inspired by his childhood backyard camping. I wish everyone could see this one in person!

Again, the show opens Friday night, 7-10 PM, at G1988 (Melrose) - no worries about this crazy insane wind. We are all good. Buckle down the hatches.

Devil's Town Is Approaching

We've entered the week of Daniel Danger's Devil Town exhibition here at G1988 (Melrose) and we're so excited. We obviously decided to focus heavily on pop culture art over the past few years, but we're never afraid to change things up a little - and we couldn't be happier to have Daniel as our leader into this brave new world. Opening this Friday, Dec. 2nd, with an opening reception from 7-10 PM, the line-up for Devil's Town is filled with names new to our gallery. We've seen a lot of the work from this show, themed around decayed small town imagery, and we're blown away. I figured I could bring you in a bit too, just to make sure you're as excited for Friday as we are.

Leah Giberson is brand new to G1988, but quick to join our favorites. She'll have two pieces in the show and this one is titled "Kentucky Fall." Raised by artists deep in the woods of New Hampshire, Leah's work is a perfect fit for Devil Town. Leah's pieces are considered "Mixed Media," but I'll let her words explain her interesting and intricate process:

"I start by photographing suburban and urban landscapes and then use these prints to begin my paintings. I work back into the prints with paint and sometimes embroidery thread to alter the setting and distill the essential elements of each image. The lines between the "fact" of photography image and the "fiction" of the paint are blurred at times, but not denied. I am not trying to hide the process, but rather, I am investigating where fact and fiction meet and how they influence and inform one another, creating a new and arguably truer story."

Dan MacAdam is new to G1988 as well, and will no doubt leave quite the impression. This 17-COLOR SCREENPRINT (!!!!!!) couldn't look more like a photo if it tried. I have stared at it for hours, trying to even understand how something this complicated exists and truthfully I've just given up. I love this piece so much.

G1988 favorite JC Richard returns with this stunning screeprint, "A Thousand Years Wide." JC has quickly become one of my favorite screenprint artists and the demand for his work has become so furious over the past few months. His Hudsucker Proxy inspired print from Crazy 4 Cult 5 will always be one of screenprints I hold closest to my heart (you know, for kids). I have a pretty good feeling this one won't be available long either.

We're releasing a TON of prints on Black Friday, so we figured we'd show off two more today before you sit down to eat bird.

Leontine Greenberg's recent Venice sold out show was a HUGE hit, we knew we had to release a print. So we went to our blog and Facebook and had the fans pick which print they would like to see produced from the show. And Ferry Man was the winner! One of my favorites from the show as well, now as a signed and numbered giclee print, will be available on Friday!

This time Scott Belcastro takes aim at everyone's favorite driver, making a great companion for the Boyes screenprint. The original of this was sold privately recently and ANYONE who came in the gallery and saw it, freaked out over it, so there will be a VERY limited run of these, first available on Friday.

Devil Comin' Round

I've always liked Daniel Danger. We've known each other for quite some time now and I've always considered him a friend. But it wasn't until about a year ago when we realized we shared a common interest that from that day on would make us some type of pop culture brothers. We are both insanely obsessed with Friday Night Lights the TV show. Obsessed in a sense that neither of want to admit the characters, or storylines, aren't real. When the show came to end recently, Daniel and I would text each other, while most likely crying in our houses in different states, knowing how important this show was to us, and how it probably always be. Clear eye, full heart, grown men tearing up about small town football life.

The one thing that Daniel I loved about Friday Night Lights, right behind the characters that we wished were our best friends, our linemen, was the backdrop of Dillon, Texas. The small Texas city where everything revolved around the Friday night high school football game was one of the stars of the shows. The sets created, and sometimes fabricated (they did film in Austin), told stories all on their own. Being from Los Angeles my whole life (I grew up in the suburb of Calabasas that had more yogurt shops than trees), it was really a culture shock that I loved. I envied small town life and loved the aesthetic. Daniel, who's toured to just about every small town in the US with his band (and while displaying his art to some extent) and lives in rural Massachusetts himself, obviously has a different history and feeling about these areas, but we connected the same way when it was portrayed on our favorite TV show. And that's where the idea from this show was born.

Daniel, who's work resides within deserted and desolate looks into nature, has curated a show that is very different for Gallery1988. "Devil Town," isn't inspired by Friday Night Lights (although NEVER FORGET), but Daniel explained like this the the artists we invited:

"I wanted to do something that was more about environment and atmosphere; rural and distant suburbs, dead farmlands, quiet and dark towns, lampposts, convenience stores, high school bleachers, teenage suburban escapism, abandoned industry, etc. Generally the opposite of more defined 'urban art' conventions."

We couldn't be more excited about this show. It's a definite change of pace for us and we welcome it with open arms. Daniel has unveiled one of his new prints for the show already and it's beautiful and a great representation of what the show is about...

We're going to be featuring a lot of these artists until the show opening on Dec 2nd, especially since so many are new names to G1988, but first we figured we'd hone in on 2.

First up is Mike Doyle. Daniel recently saw his work the same place I did: all over blogs. Mike makes UNREAL Victorian, decrepit Lego buildings that you would swear are a product of photoshop or some sort of black magic. Here's an example:

I can't believe he can do that. Mike will be participating in his ever first art show with "Devil Town," displaying and selling his signature photographs of these buildings. Look at these details:

And then there's Dan Lydersen. After his incredible painting in our LOST Underground Art Project and his recent beauty in the Video Game show at Venice, he is easily in my top ten artists we show. His detail is unparalleled and the little world he creates is so intriguing. This is one of his two pieces in "Devil Town," and it's a painted diptych. It's called "Front & Rear" and is beautiful. It captures the instructions of Daniel to a tee.

It goes without saying, this show is going to be stunning. Mark your calendars now, for after Thanksgiving (p.s. while you're in the calendar, our annual sale is right around the corner) as "Devil Town" will open December 2nd, 7-10 PM at G1988 (Melrose).

Young Adult poster #6

Another surprise screening, another Young Adult poster. This time right in our own backyard at the New Beverly Cinema down the street from Melrose gallery. Tonight we unveiled the Los Angeles Young Adult screenprint, by Arkansas native Matt Owen. Everyone who was lucky enough to see the advance screening of the movie went home with one of these, for free (the ONLY way you can get any of the YA prints)! Then they stopped by Gallery1988 (Melrose) for a nice little after-party with the cast & crew.

One of director Jason Reitman's favorite artists, Matt made an awesome piece based on one of the most iconic images from the film, Charlize Theron's stained dress.

We've been so lucky to be working with Jason Reitman and Paramount Pictures on this project, and remember to stay up to date with Young Adult's Twitter account (@youngadultmovie) and look out for screenings in your city and its release in December!

We here at Gallery1988 are major Bill Murray fans, so much so that I have a cat with the same name. I feel like our parents had Peter Sellers, their parents had Buster Keaton, and we have Bill. An absolute eccentric genius who has inspired so much in our generation, he almost warrants a "OH MAN" every time you start rattling off the movies he's been in. That's why we decided to tribute Mr. Murray with our newest show, "Please Post Bills." Opening Nov. 3 at the Melrose gallery, next Thursday, this exhibit will feature 80 artists, all creating paintings, sculptures and prints influenced by the movies, TV appearances and iconic jokes of a comedic legend.

Our friends over at SlashFilm posted the first preview to "Please Post Bills," so we wanted to share the love over here at our blog.

Another day, another announcement!

We'll be teaming up with Jason again, and this time with Paramount Pictures, for his new upcoming film, "Young Adult." Check out the words from Slashfilm...

Paramount Pictures is running unannounced pop-up screenings of Jason Reitman‘s new film Young Adult in cities around North America. The first screening took place in Toronto Canada tonight. As a special bonus, Jason and Paramount enlisted the curatorial services of Los Angeles’s famous pop culture art gallery Gallery1988 to pick the artists and produce limited edition pieces of art for the surprise screenings.

This has been another one of those secrets we've been holding onto, and we're so excited to show you what artist Lil' Tuffy came up with...

We loved working on this project, as Jason wanted to really focus on the tradition of "gig posters", like you'd see available for purchase at your favorite band's intimate concert locally. He wanted to shy away from the artist movie poster take that's popping up every day, which ourselves, and most importantly the artist, a lot of freedome when making awesome screenprints to take home from the screenings.

We worked with film director Jason Reitman, and the good people from LACMA, to create limited edition screenprints for the upcoming Live Read events that are just too good to be true. Jason has selected classic movie screenplays, and enlisted his talented friends to come in and table read the entire film in front of an audience. The first event, which sold out in mere minutes, will be The Breakfast Club and goes down this Thursday. So we've enlisted Matt Owen to customize his Breakfast Club poster, and make it exclusive for LACMA.

One of the most identifiable artists we've worked with, Peter Gronquist, is back in the gallery next week with his new solo show, "The Evolution Will Be Fabulous." Forever growing and evolving, we're always excited to see what Peter will do next, and his new show definitely does not disappoint!

Gronquist is probably most well know for his designer weapons, which we featured "The Revolution Will Be Fabulous" in 2008:

The show was widely covered in the press and even featured on Kanye West's blog, resulting in a hand-delivered cease and desist letter. The weapons, a favorite amongst buyers in the entertainment industry, can be see at the Hard Rock Hotel and Angels and Kings in Chicago and Los Angeles.

Since 2008, Peter has left the designer labels behind, and has merged the worlds of gold-plated weapons and taxidermy. We first saw an example of Peter's new style in 2009 at the Vivisect Playset in San Francisco:

Peter's new show, "The Evolution Will be Fabulous" features an entire show of embellished animal trophies, but even larger and more fabulous than any of his past work (check out the postcard image). BUT you'll have to wait for the show to open to see the new pieces, as we won't be previewing this show. It's going to be a surprise, so stay tuned!

The Butcher Kings, Alex Pardee & Skinner, will open their 2-man(iac) show Thursday night, 7-10 PM at our Melrose location - and it's actually crazy. Not crazy in the way Prince might ask you to a dance at his concert, but crazy in the way that John Wayne Gacy may have asked you to dance before he killed you. Per request of the artists, all images have been kept secret until the opening party, where both will be in attendance, so I have very little to show you. You'll have to trust me when I tell you - this stuff in bonkos, so if you're in LA, stop by.

Things that are bubbling in the underground and soon to hit the mainstream. Look at it as a "Cool Things" type of show. Past guests include Mike Shinoda, Jonah Ray, Casey Veggies, DC Pierson, Pete Wentz and Wallpaper. This week I had the pleasure, and absolute nightmare-ish feelings, of having The Butcher Kings on the show and the results are successful (if you consider the Titanic maiden voyage successful because it made for a good movie).

The Proof Is On Fire

In case you haven't figured it out, this Thursday's Melrose show, "The Butcher Kings," with art from Alex Pardee & Skinner is going to be both fun and twisted.

I know we've kept this show in a shroud of utter secrecy, but we figured we'd let you in a little. Here's a statement from the Kings themselves:

When Skinner and I met in the late 90's, the Internet hadn't yet been integrated as a common marketing tool for artists and musicians, and the actual outlets that WERE available for us to spread our imagination and artwork out to were limited to friends, family, schools, the local comic shops and the occasional small cafe-galleries and musical acts that catered toward non-traditional artwork. The bi-product of being undeniably driven by the passion to create without having outlets for either critiques OR validations, however, was that we both created our artwork strictly for ourselves and to make US happy. Over the course of the last decade, as the Internet has become a more common and extremely useful tool in all aspects of art appreciation, execution, networking, and entrepreneurism, Skinner and I have attempted to adapt our thinking and artistic approaches in conjunction with this accelerated technology, but on numerous occasions we have also caught ourselves falling victim to this new widespread accessibility to our artwork.

The Internet provides such a rapid firing of both criticism and praise that, over the course of the last few years, has made both Skinner and I almost TOO aware of what people will like or dislike when our work is displayed publicly, causing us to recently questions just who we are no creating art for. Are our imaginations subconsciously aware more so now of what others will think about our art? Are we now being secretly driven to create something that more people can "relate" to in hopes that we will in turn get more Twitter followers and more Facebook likes and somehow transcribe that invisible validation to more monetary success? In short, Skinner and I both realized that, for whatever reasons, we were taking ourselves too seriously.

Well, f*ck that.

We missed creating art with the sole purpose of making ourselves smile and laugh. We missed no caring if we "lose a follower" by offending someone with a drawing of a demonic dick if that dick was fun to draw. And trust us, dicks are fun to draw. And they are hilarious.

So in an attempt to re-unite our fearlessness, and to simply have fun using our separate memories and inspirations as our tools, Skinner and I present to you, "THE BUTCHER KINGS."

Using existing pop culture icons that we adore, and mutually drawing inspiration from various sources including Gary Larsen's 'The Far Side', Jack Kirby, Wheel of Fortune, Carrot Top, Filmation Cartoons, Robot Chicken & Aqua Teen Hunger Force, we imagined what would happen if all of a sudden the memories of every pop culture property has begun to be torn apart by an unknown force and, in order to save the memories from total eradication, had to be gathered and reassembled by someone who was goofy, cynical, socially inept and slight insane. That person...is us.

I don't even really know what to say. Today, I was lucky enough to see a small preview of the work that will be on display at our Melrose location starting October 6th and I haven't really spoken to anyone since. Alex Pardee and Skinner, who have taken the idea of a 2-man show to brand new heights by living with each other and working non-stop next to each other for the past 2 weeks, have created what might be the craziest, and most impressive show I've ever seen. This one is going to be tightly wrapped in secrecy, because the goal of the show is to see it's massive undertaking all at one time, and give you the ability to buy some incredible affordable art (keep in mind, the last time we did that it was Olly Moss's show, so expect more greatness).

You won't be seeing much before the show, outside of some more photos, and a video or two, but I PROMISE YOU, you will not want to miss this show. Alex and Skinner will be at the opening reception on October 6th, from 7-10 PM at Melrose. On the scale of 1-10, this work is just ridiculous. SHAKING MY HEAD.

Two of the best three dimensional pieces we've ever had in the gallery just so happen to be in our Old School Video Game show opening this Friday!!

Scribe and his wife, Alisa Ross, created this insane Dig Dug collab, which is part custom vinyl, part handmade plush.

And Andrew Wilson created this flawless Samus sculpture titled "The Hunter". Totally amazing!

And one more addition to the show that we received yesterday is Roland Tamayo's "Just Before"...

This is how Roland imagines Bowser and the Bullet Bills preparing for war. They're approaching the "battlefield," just before the player loads the Super Mario Bros. cartridge into the console. And the F-85 on the factory represents 1985, the year the Bullet Bills were introduced into the series.

After our signing tonight with author Ernest Cline for his book, "Ready Player One," we're excited to keep the video game mojo going with "The Old School Video Game Art Show" over at Gallery1988 (Venice). It opens this Friday night, September 16th, with an opening reception from 7-10 PM. The artwork for this show is outstanding, and it's sneak peek time!!

Jayson Weidel tackles everyone's favorite ape (OK, some may like Dr. Zaius more).

Been a while since our good friend Greg "Craola" Simkins has done a group show, but he's back and mourning the death of 8-bit. So sad.

David Eichenberger paints a Pac-Man with robot legs, a malfunction and what seems to be a taunting ghost. Times are rough.

G1988 favorite Dave Perillo remixes a game very close to many peoples' hearts, Burgertime. This one is not for vegans.

Justin White advertises for a guided tour of "Le Chateau" and warns us that our princess might just be in another chateau. I bet they play awesome music on this tour.

Joey Spiotto created another fake album, like he's done for Firefly and Dr. Horrible, this time giving a plaque to fictitious Zelda music. THIS IS SO AWESOME.

Join us this Saturday, September 10th, 7-9 PM, as we welcome author Ernest Cline to the Melrose location to sign his new, critically acclaimed NY Times Best Seller, and ode to 80's culture and video games, Ready Player One.

“The classic 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde” is now so heavily identified with its leading actors that people often forget that others had auditioned for those roles. This studio still shot shows Tommy Gun during a screen test for the part of Clyde Barrow. While it’s usually accepted that Warren Beatty took the role for himself because he was producing the movie; others suggest that he did so upon the insistence of Faye Dunaway (cast as Bonnie Parker), who objected to Tommy’s diminutive stature…he being just over 3 feet tall.”

Our plan with the upcoming Garbage Pail Kids tribute at G1988 (Melrose) on September 2nd is to keep as many of the pieces hidden until we open the doors. We kinda just want people to be blown away and surprised at how creative our artists have gone with this show (especially those who think Garbage Pail Kids aren't that important...CAUSE THEY ARE!). We want the experience to actually speak for itself, rather than have everyone see the completed before it even opens.

But we've been getting so many emails with people hoping to catch a glimpse and figure out what the show is all about, we have to change up the plan a little. So we're going to show a few before the opening reception in 2 weeks, and today, you'll see the first...

We could not be more excited about this! TV producer and friend of the gallery, Martin Gero, is working on a new show called Highland Gardens, and they've been filming up in Toronto for the past few weeks. AND, he's included Gallery1988 in the script!!! How you ask?

Well, they've recreated Gallery1988 (Melrose) in Toronto!!! Isn't that the craziest thing you've ever heard???

We're honored. And you guys better keep your eyes and ears open for Highland Gardens, cause then we'll be TV stars and we'll wear sunglasses indoors.

It's that time again where we are looking for a Gallery intern to help with the runnings of our Melrose location. It would be a 3 month internship, and we're looking for help 2-3 days a week, a few hours a day. You'll learn the daily workings of an art gallery / retail space, and also probably listen to podcasts while we work. We prefer students looking for school credit, as anything outside of that would be a "volunteer," which we aren't mad at either, just putting out the standard rules. Volunteers also welcome.

Gallery1988 (Melrose) is proud to announce its upcoming show to kick off September, a month both gallery locations will celebrate as "Childhood Items We Miss The Most Month."

First up is an official tribute to the grossest trading card set ever produced, Garbage Pail Kids. 2 years in making, Gallery1988 will continue to be the world's #1 destinations for pop culture art, this time collaborating with a product that, in many cases, was the first instance of collectable art in our buyers' childhood lives (it was ours!).

Opening Friday September 2nd, you'll see the results when over 100 of your favorite artists were asked to create their own Garbage Pail Kids, and some may even become actual cards soon!

Produced with our friends at Topps and The Hundreds, this show will be of epic proportions. Stay tuned for more information about the show, upcoming collaborations between The Hundreds and GPK (and how you can get the first t-shirts at G1988), as well as a screening of the cinematic gem, "Garbage Pail Kids," with our pals at Cinefamily (The Silent Movie Theater) that you can attend on September 3rd!

The Dan Goodsell watercolors were available in-store when the show opened, and we've finally scanned them all and added them to the website for online purchase. Nathan Stapley is back at Gallery1988 later this month with a brand new solo show! We've worked with Nathan for years in the Melrose and San Francisco locations, but this will be his first show at our Venice gallery and he's coming to town all the way from NYC, so you must come say hello. The show is called "The Same Gang: compartmentalizing pop-culture iconography" and features all new works, where Nathan brings your favorite pop-culture icons together by similar attributes. For example, in the "Dads" painting, Jack Torrance from The Shining, Darth Vader, and Homer Simpson are just a few of our all-time favorite pop-culture fathers hanging out at a backyard BBQ.
